I'm using a CRT projector that only has component inputs and I don't feel like spending $250 for an HDMI adapter or a board with HDMI inputs. I'm sure I can get 720p and 1080i fine on my games through component but what about Blu-Ray? I've heard some people say 720p/1080i will work fine over component, I've heard people say 720p won't work but 1080i will, and I've heard the PS3 can't play Blu-Ray movies at all in HD over component. So whats the real deal? Someone here has to know.

But Blu-Ray will work fine in 1080i over component right? There's no HDCP bull crap that will restrict me to 480p over component?

Yes, Blu-Ray content looks great over component...for now. If/when the studios start turning on the image constraint token on future movies, you'll have to use an HDMI/HDCP connection to view them in full 1080 -- any analog rendering will be lower resolution. But for right now, everything that's being released will render in full 1080 over component.

I was wondering if you could help me with another question about using the ps3 over component video cables. My TV only does 480i, 480p and 1080i. I know that I can watch Blu-ray movies in 1080i, but can I also play games in 1080i or will the ps3 downgrade my resolution to 480p? Thanks.

I have seen games only go as high as 720p.

It depends on the game. Some games support 1080x, others only support up to 720p. For the games that don't support a 1080x rendering mode, they'll revert to 480p as the output resolution. Basically, each game has several supported resolutions that the engine can render at. It checks its list of supported rendering modes against the supported resolutions set in the PS3. The game will choose the highest rendering mode supported by the PS3. Except for special cases where the game will render internally at 720p, but supports the horizontal scaling functionality of the PS3, and will then render at 960x1080, relying on the scaler to scale the image to 1920x1080, but only if 720p is not available.

That depends on the game, and this has been an ongoing source of annoyance for PS3 owners with 1080i-only TVs, like me. Gaming sites don't publish resolution support info with their reviews, and the resolution support printed on the game boxes can't be trusted, so we usually have to wait for people to be guinea pigs and try out each new game on a 1080i system to know whether we'll get HD video or not.

Here's a frequently updated list of PS3 games that tells whether they support 1080i. So far Sega has been the standard bearer for 1080i support -- I believe all of their PS3 games to date have supported 1080i, even if they're 720p native.

Hope that helps.

Thanks so much for all of your quick responses. This issue is what's been keeping me from taking the plunge on a PS3 for a while now. Jer, thanks for the list. This will make it much eaiser to know which games will allow me to get the most out of the system and my tv.

I believe the analog output on ICT-enabled discs will be 960x540, which is only 1/4 the pixels of 1080p and only 50% more pixels than 480p. This will be a big middle finger to anyone without an HDMI/HDCP-capable TV set, but at least it will only affect titles that choose to enable the ICT...

ICT will never be implemented, mark my words. Seeing as how it is meant to help stop piracy, it is kinda moot when people have been ripping the actual discs digitally. Analog copying is the least of their worries.

This was posted a couple months ago, can anyone verify if this is still true (in case a firmware update changed it or whatever)? Only 720p/1080i over component for games (not movies)? That's pretty lame considering even the X360 does 1080p over component.
