After several months of "study" and thanks to all the info provided on SilentPCReview.com and in renethx's excellent thread, I am about to pull the trigger on the following configuration.

The idea is of having a near silent PC, capable of playing H.264 and VC-1 content at up to 1080p resolutions and top BD bitrates.

Have at it and please, take no prisoners!

Case: Silverstone LC-17c, black color (I can't fit the Antec in my cabinet
). Cooled by front twin 9cm Noiseblocker BlackSilent Fan XE1 and back twin 8cm Noiseblocker BlackSilent Fan X1. Fans are gonna be installed with either rubber screws or silicon insulation. The case will be further noise insulated with custom cut Magic Fleece .

PSU: Corsair HX520W with modular cabling

MB: GigaByte 965P-DS3

CPU: Core 2 Duo E4300

CPU Heatsink: Thermalright SI-128 with 12cm Noctua NF-S12-1200 fan.

GPU: GV-NX85T256H (GeForce 8500GT)

Memory: Corsair 1GB TWIN2X1024-6400 (DDR2 800, in case I will need to overclock)

Hard Disk: 2.5" 100GB Hitachi Travelstar 7K100 suspended in NoVibes noise dampener .

Sound: I'm thinking of using the onboard sound from the motherboard. Otherwise I could use an X-Fi that I have available, but only if there's real need.

DVD reader/writer: SATA Samsung SH-S183L (to be later substituted by an HD-DVD or BD drive)

OS: Windows XP with MediaPortal

I think this is it. Fire away!

You could probably use a regular desktop drive, especially if you're going to suspend it. With the amount of sound dampening you're using, it should be essentially silent.

That way you won't sacrifice so much on speed and capacity (and $/GB).

The idea is to have it stream most of the stuff from a server through Gigabit Ethernet connection.
