Please help with second hand speakers

Hi everyone,

I am after a bit of help, i currently have a denon 2309 7.1 avr which is working pretty well and i am happy with.

I am currently using a budget Eltax jupiter speaker system which i have had for about 8 years. (2x tower, 1x center, 2x small bookshelf). Teamed up with a B&W AS2 subwoofer

I want to get better sound and on a very tight budget and have currently come across a set of 4 Mordaunt Short Avant MS902 bookshelf speakers for £70.00

There is a star shape appearing in the cone, is this anything to be worried about? they seem to work ok but a little worried.

Can anyone please give me an idea of the quality of these speakers and if they are any good with denon?

Also would i notice an improvement for movies against the budget Eltax set i have been using?

Any help would be appreciated as well as any other pointers and tips.

Thankyou

Those are 20 years old. There is some info in this thread and some reviews here.

In the UK you have some pretty sweet deals on high quality bookshelf speakers, such as Wharfedale 220 or Q Acoustics 3020, 150 quid per pair at Richer Sounds. If your room is on the small side and you don't listen super loud, I'd just get 3 pairs and use one of them as a center.

Or if you simply want to improve 2 channel music performance, get just one pair and move your current towers to surround duty since you already have a sub to do the bass.

The thing about buying used, esp. ancient old used, is that if you get them home and don't like the way they sound or find something is defective, you're SOL.

Thankyou for your input guys just trying to get a better sound with a very tight budget. Been looking at good quality used bookshelfs and also on richer sounds.

wow! i did not realise they were actually that old. However as long as the sound is a decent sound and better than the budget cheapy set i been using i will be happy i guess.

Will check out the link now.

Again thankyou guys for your time 🙂

I'd check out some close out stuff ( like the wharfedale 220s) and see if you can budget that.. I'm guessing that they will outperform 20 y.o. used books in most scenarios..
Thank you, Have been looking at the 220's and the reviews sgow them to be extremely good speakers for music and for movies but i will have to save up alot more money in order to get 2 sets.

I thought for £70 for a set of 4 of those mordaunt short speakers i posted a pic of was a good step to a better sounding system than what i currently have.

Would anyone here say they are worth £70 for 4 of them?

Also what worries me is the star shape in cone..

i am Very undecided but looking around at speakers for a cheap price for better sound is becoming my life Lol.

Again thankyou guys for all help 🙂👍
For 70 quid, I don't think you will find much better for four bookshelf speakers.
I also wouldn't worry aobut that star shape in the cones at all. The cones don't look ripped and the surrounds look intact.

Thankyou SigPig The star shape was really worrying me. i think i may just take the plunge and buy them tomorrow. Surely they have to give better sound than the budget brand i am currently using.

Does anyone have experience of these particular speakers?

Teamed with a denon avr and a sub would they be a good match?

Alot of reviews suggest they are a bright sounding speaker.

Again thankyou all, really helps to have someone to ask at times 🙂
The star pattern is obviously design. For the price id buy them. My reading says they can be bright which i would say might be problematic. Different positioning such as instead of toe-in they face straight. Rc will tame them a bit and down the road acustic panels that are easily made if your at all handy will tame reflection points.

I've owned a pair of 902's for about 15 years. I got a great deal on some Aviano 6 towers which I'm now using instead but I will never sell the 902's. I use them to compare just about every other speaker I buy because I'm so familiar with them. They do have the traditional British sound (un-like Wharfedale) meaning more "clear" then "musical" but things like soundstage and stereo separation, if they can be defined and/or measured, are the best I have ever had. And I've had many. But, it could be just me. I wouldn't call them bright, just very clear. The similar sized Polk RTi4 would be considered bright.

The Aviano 5 center is quite a bit better then the 905 though. Again, IMO. Mordaunt Short is in short supply in the USA but I do own 5 AW162's dual 6" in-walls which I really should sell.
