Ok, so this is my first post and my first time buying an HD TV. I don't have a ton of dough to spend, and I have read ALOT on the threads on this site about the LCD sets in my price range ($650-$800) and I find it completely overwhelming to be honest. So, I need help...

I will be using this set with DirecTV HD DVR and PS3.

I have narrowed it down to:

Olevia 537H - $675 at CompUsa (going out of business)

Vizio VX37L - $750 at BJs Wholesalers

Dynex NS-LCD37 - $650 at Bestbuy

Sharp Aquos LC37D40U - $784 plus shipping - gobuydigital.com/productdetail.asp?productid=2238 - I am weary of this because it has to be shipped and I am not sure how well these sets travel...

So, All things being equal. Which set should I buy. I am throwing myself on the mercy of the AVS Forum minds!

Thanks very much.

really need help on this one!
are you seriously trying to pass this off as a HARD decision between those brands? get the sharp, the other brands are all throw-aways. maybe the vizio would be respectable, but the sharp is far better. stay away from dynex and olevia.
Don't know about any of those sets, but all sets have to travel to be delivered. Why would being delivered to your house instead of a store make any difference? If the Sharp in what you want, don't worry about the TV being in the back of a truck. Now the company's return policy is a different matter (I don't know anything about the company you have listed above).
Thats a good point PDCL, I hadn't thought of it that way hah.

Isul1648 - thanks for the feedback.

Anyone else?
I wouldn't go with Dynex that's for sure. I can't really comment on their LCD TV's, but judging by their past products, I would not touch ANYTHING Dynex.

Apparently, the Olevia 537H is capable of RGB and temperature controls which, according to some review sites, other TV's of this price lack. Not sure if this is something that matters or not but hey, just a thought

I would go with Sharp simply because I respect the brand. I've been using a Sharp LCD monitor for over 2 years now and it is the best LCD monitor I've seen.

Good luck on the TV though! Let us know when you get it and how it turns out!

For what it's worth, the Consumer Reports Quick Recommendations on 37" LCD's...

"Good values in 37-inch sets:

• Insignia NS-LCD37 , $750

• Olevia 537H , $800

• Vizio VW37LHDTV , $770

All three 720p sets offer very good picture quality for the price, though it's a step below the best. The Insignia had a typical viewing angle, while the Vizio had a very good viewing; we don't have data for the previously tested Olevia."

The only Sharp they had in the 37" sets was the LC-37D43U which was listed at $1250 (highest $ of the 9 37" sets) and had only "good" HD and SD picture quality (only set not to have "very good" or "excellent" scores in both areas).

You have to decide whether size is more important then quality.

If your willing to downsize to a 32 inch screen, then your just about in the Panasonic LX700 series model price range. If necessary, wait a little longer and save a few more dollars and/or wait for the price to drop into your price range. This tv has been getting great reviews so far.
As far as 'low-tier' brands go, I'd go with Insignia. They make pretty good tvs for the price. I owned a 32" about 1 1/2 years ago, and I loved it. Better than Westy, Vizio, Dynex, Akai, olevia, IMHO.
dynex ... i got a portable dvd player .... its good
I would go with sharp and then only gamble on the vizio. You get what you pay for, sure any of them 3 no names might look great for six months and then trouble starts. Lines start going across your screen or who knows what. Cnet recommended vizio as best budget screen in some review I read, but i would vote for the Sharp. Sharp compared to those others is highly respected which I think means a lot these days. There is also been some sharp deals floating around, buy a new sharp tv and get a free blue ray player.

Sharp has the best contrast and darkest blacks, except for more expensive Samsung and Sony. So the Sharp picture will be more life like and enjoyable for movies which have many contrasty scenes, eg. Black Rain, etc. lcd-bob
If you're looking for a 37" LCD a reasonable price and good PQ I highly reccomend the Toshiba REGZA 37HL67 . For its size, its price, and being a 720p, the image quality will blow you away.
I would go with the Sharp or the Vizio.

Vizio is not a "throw away" brand. They make very good sets. I haven't had any experience with the others you have listed. I usually like Vizio just because they seem to offer more for the money then anyone else IMO.

Thanks very much.

Of the ones you listed, I'd go with the Sharp Aquos - I have a 42" 62U that's been working great for almost 2 years and these smaller screens don't have the banding issues that the larger screen Sharps have. I'm not sure if Samsung makes a 37", but you might check and see. Samsung is also a very good brand. You might also check out Circuit City, HHGregg, and Amazon the week before the super bowl as they'll probably be having sales on HDTVs. HHGreg will often come close to what's on Amazon. In any case, I'd stay with a major brand (i.e. Sharp, Samsung, Sony).
