I want a tv in the bedroom and do not have any space to put a tube tv so I now need an LCD.

I was going to go with a new Sharp 26 incher with built in HD tuner but that thing is 2K and it may be a too large for the bedroom.

So now I am thinking of getting a non-widescreen non-hd (maybe EDTV) LCD between 20 to 25 inches.

But my main question is, how will the picture look on this type of LCD with ANALOG Cable? I won't even be using a digital cable box for this tv, just plain old analog.

Any recomendations on specific LCDs that will be good for my use?

I just spent a pretty penny on my main tv/home theatre, I have a 52 inch JVC H-DILA with Comcast and the Motorola 6412 HD box. Zenith DVB 318 and a Harmon Kardon receiver with JBL surrounds.

I really want to go all out and get that 26 inch Sharp with HD tuner, but the money factor is kinda holding me back. So I am hoping the budget way, using the analog signal and a non-hd lcd will look ok. And that is where I need your help.

Thanks all!

I have the 22" Panasonic TC-22LH1, last year's model, and have connected analog cable to it. The picture is better than Tivo to s-video, and better than the analog channels with SA 3250HD to component. My rankings from what I have connected to it are.

1. HD - component

2. DVD PS - component

3. analog cable - straight to TV

4. Tivo SD - svideo

5. SA 3250HD SD- component

6. SA 3250 SD- svideo

4-6 are all about the same though.

It also comes with HDMI that Paul Bigelow has tried with the Panny upconverting DVD player and from what I understand with great success.

I think the MSRP of the current model LH30 is $1,799 but you could get it for at least 10% less.

PS - I use it in my bedroom. My wife likes the aesthetics and so do I.

I got the 20" Sharp LC-20S1U-B last month for the kitchen. We also have Comcast Cable here in the Philly area and it's plugged right into the TV.

The PQ is usually very good. On certain channels, you will notice artifacts and pixelation, but I think it's due to the cable signal itself (the 25" CRT that we have has trouble on the same channels).

If you don't need/want HD, this Sharp is a good deal. I think it's being discontinued, so you may be able to find a great deal on it. I know I did.

I totally understand that the analog signal will not be awesome, but I am not looking for an awesome signal in the bedroom. I am looking for small form factor with an ok picture from an analog source. I will not be hooking up a DVD player, a set top box, or any game console. Of course if the analog signal is crappy I don't want that either.

From what I read in your post, the analog cable signal is not to bad on your LCD which is good news for me. I should be able to find a good price on an LCD that size to hang on the wall in the bedroom.

Thanks for the reply

The current LC26GA5U is $1999 with a $200 rebate. After March 1 it will be $1799. It's a great set. I have an LC26GA4U in the bedroom hooked up to a Scientific Atlanta 8300HD STB and DVR. Pretty awesome combination.

For about $1000 you can get a Sharp LC20B6US which has a PC input and will accept and resolve HD inputs (with black bands top and bottom). Also a pretty good performer.

Thanks all, I ended up buying a Panasonic TC-20LA2D from Costco for a very nice price. And of course I can return it at any time for any reason. Better than any warranty you can buy. I also bought a nice LCD cantilever arm and mounted it in my bedroom and it looks awesome.

Now for pic quality, I was totally shocked on how analog cable looks, and it is a good shocked. The picture is (to my suprise) very good. I am a very happy person. It is a 4:3 tv (which is what I wanted, didnt want a widescreen) since all I will be watching on this tv for a long time is analog cable.

Very happy with the panasonic and I would recomend it to anyone who has similar needs. I was going to go with a Sharp, but I saw the panny next to a sharp at sixth ave (extremely similar specs and price) and the panny looked much better so I was sold.

Analog cable shocks me too on how bad it looks compared to HD. I would have gone for the Costco 32" 16:9 LCDs and used it with an HD box.

Wait for next month's release of the new Dell 24 inch 1900 x 1200 LCD HDTV monitor/TV. It will take component and DVI. It is not HDCP compatable, but you are going analog anyways, so that's a moot point for you. It will retail for about $1200. This is the one I'll be picking up, as I can use it as an extra monitor. AND, it has the added bonus of including a card reader, so you can use it as a picture frame to display your digital photos as well.

The real question will be the quality of the LCD panel...we'll have to see about that one.
