I have a Monster surge protector/power conditioner that I currently have everything plugged into. I just ordered 2 Emotiva amplifiers. This is my first step into seperates. I currently have a Yamaha RX-V1 that I will be using as a pre/pro until Emotiva releases their new processor. I also have a MFW-15 and Mirage OM-5 main speakers that have their own built in amps. I currently have everything plugged into the surge protector. I've never had a problem with it but I've read that amps should be plugged directly into an outlet so power isn't limited.

Emotiva recommeds that their amps are plugged directly into a wall outlet. They said the amps have their own built in protection and that most surge protectors can limit peak power and hurt performance. I am installing a few new outlets that will be on a dedicated 20 amp circuit for the amps. I am wondering if I should plug the MFW-15 and Mirage OM-5's directly into a wall outlet as well instead of the surge protector?

What do you guys think?

sounds like a nice setup there - i read that also about Emovtia to plug directly in the wall - if you think you have a good line - i would be a little worried - for one - i had a bad experince with one amp - i had everything plugged in my surge protector expect for one amp - i had two at the time - and one rainy day - i decided to listen to music - i flipped the switch and Poof - up in smoke my amp went - and that was the only item not in the surge protector - i didnt have any room left -

now the amps were older models - but both worked great till that day - the other worked fine - now it dosnt mean that it was the wall outlet that did it - or it was just time for the amp to die - but ever since then - i use a power conditioner - Belkin Pf60 - its there top model and it has two high current outlets for high power amps -

now i cant say if that would affect the output of those emotiva amps or not - right now i have a marantz 7002 avr on the high current and a pro audio QSC also using the high current plugs in the conditioner - i feel much better and it dosnt affect them as far as i can tell -

but maybe the emotiva models could be different -

you can always get a power conditioner to plug other things in - and then try the amps - with and without - to see if you hear a difference - those are nice amps - i am in a apt. - i wish i could have a dedicated 20 amp outlet in a dedicated music room -

Thanks for the response. I am hoping the amps work out for me. This is my fist time trying seperates. I've wanted to for a long time and since I am overdue upgrading my current reciever I decided now was the time. I tried a few different receivers over the last few months but none of them sounded as good as my current Yamaha. I am mainly only upgrading for the newer audio codecs and a bit more power would be nice as well. The RX-V1 does sound excellent but at very loud volumes it gets a little bright. Anyway I decided this was a good time to try seperates.

I ordered an Emotiva XPA-2 for the main channels and a XPA-5 for the rest. It should be a nice upgrade. They are suppose to arrive on Friday. I am trying to get the outlets installed before then.

I asked people on the Emotiva forums if the amps should be plugged into the wall or a surge protector and everyone said the wall. Someone who works for Emotiva posted and said the amps have their own built in protection and should be plugged directly into the wall.

I also posted the same question about the MFW-15 on av123 forums and one person, so far, said to plug it directly into the wall.

Since my Mirage OM-5s are fairly old I doubt anyone on Mirage's forum would be able to help me. If the universal answer is yes for the amps and sub then I will plug the OM-5s directly into the wall as well.

I think I will leave the receiver plugged into the surge protector since it won't be drawing much power without the internal amps being used.
