building ht room in basement, steps that lead to it are kinda just unfinished splintery wood. I thought about staining them and varnishing, but im thinking the varnish would make a slip easy. I dont want to leave them the way they are and get splinters though, any ideas?

Personally, I think the nicest look is to stain them and poly; then just do a runner of carpet. Wont slip, and the wood gives it a classier look.

But if they look half as bad as mine, ther eis no way in hell you are going to stain them to look good, you would have to apply a layer of wood over the top of it first... it would take a pro an entire day just to cut the sides and glue them on, it would take another guy doing the steps.. that is why it is so expensive.

I vote for carpet as it hides all the crap workmanship of the homebuilder.
