Polk LSim Atmos setup questions - timbre match or not for ceiling speakers?

1899 Views 4 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  blatz8
Hi all,

I have a polk lsim setup. A while back I bought some of their cheap 8" ceiling speakers, mc80 (I have 4 of them). Now that I'm finally at the point of getting to installing those, I'm second guessing myself and thought I'd ask people who know more about this stuff than me (I'm at square one).

Should I install what I have or buy the timbre matched speakers? How critical is this? The downside of ceiling speakers is that once the holes are cut, there is a good chance that I may not be able to easily change my mind if I don't like them.

There are two pairs that are timbre matched to the lsim's, the 700ls, 800ls or 900ls or the 80fxls. The first ls's I mentioned seem like a normal speaker but the latter has two tweeters. Glancing at the advertisement for the 80fxlsit looks like you can make adjustments to the tweeter.

The downside of all of these speakers is that they are much more expensive than the speakers I currently have ($50 each versus $170-229 each). Any suggestions or input on what you would do?

Honestly, I wouldn't get too hung up over timbre-matching your Atmos speakers with your mains.

You do not need to timbre match your atmos speakers, I would not worry about that.

What about the 2 rear channels? I have a pair of the LSIM 707.

Right now, I am trying to figure out if I should buy the LSIM 702 F/X or get a pair of bipolar speakers for the rear channels. The LSIM 702 F/X is a direct speaker and I am wondering if I use a bipolar speaker, would it sound better than the LSIM 702 F/X?

Definitive Technology do have some very good bipolar speakers for the rear channels.
