Im looking to order a pair of RTI A5s but the spot for them is sensitive to depth. If they are too deep it will block a walkway.

I can deal with the 15 3/4" depth from the specs but what the heck is this black thing hanging on the back? Is it optional? It looks like that could throw a monkey wrench in my plans.

Any help from an A5 owner is greaty appreciated.

EDIT: sorry, im not an A5 owner. forgot to mention that

my guess it is a type of... shield(i guess?) used to disperse the air coming out of the bass port. i would say leave it on, especially seeing as it seems like the speakers will be very close to a wall.

i would personally not change that, i would hope its there for a reason

I have a pair of A5's and love them. A5's are totally different than A9's regarding brightness. I am driving mine with an HK 3600 avr and love the sound. If possible, demo your speaker selection with the avr you plan on using to drive them. You will be amazed at the difference between avr's when using the same speakers. I would call Polk Audio to get an answer to the bottom piece you are concerned about.

Well, I went ahead and ordered the A5s, these are replacing a pair of polk RT800 that I've had forever.

Corn, I'm about 40% home theater, 40% video games, 20% music.

Murray, I wasn't sure if the 15 3/4 depth from the spec included the black piece in the back or not. I guess I will find out Friday.

I'm also an A5 owner. I love them too. I got a great price on them, and paired them up with an SVS PB12-nsd. These perform exceptionally well with Home theater and gaming. Music does take a bit of a backseat to Home theater, but with a good sub, I doubt you'll have any regrets!

I'll measure my speakers for you tonight, and take a few pictures if you'd like. They are good sized speakers, but not larger than any other floorstander.

Edit:

I'd also leave the black plastic on the back of the speaker. It's what polk calls a "power port". It's meant to help with a rear ported speaker placed closer to a wall. My inlaws have RTi8's, 1 of which is placed with a few inches of the wall without any negative effects.

Thanks Todd!

From the first picture I think I will be ok, even with the 'power port'. The footprint depth of my RT800 was only about 13" so I guess I was a bit spoiled in that regard.

todd,

thanks for going through the trouble. 15 3/4" is going to work out just fine for me. I was just worried that it was 15 3/4" + power port.

i'm getting black too...

Hello,

I'm very interested in the RTi A5 but the location is a bit sensitive to size. Would someone be able to tell me how wide the speaker box is? Looking for the width of the box and the width of the box plus the feet.

Thank you in advance for any help!!

Brian
