Polk S50 vs S55 vs S60 vs Any other Good Alternative

Hi Everyone ,

I am planning to build a HT in my living room (18 x 10). My seating distance would be 6 feet from the tv screen. Mostly i would mostly like to watch movies / tv shows and occasionally some music. Cant decide between the Polk S50 vs S55 vs S60 or any other alternative tower speakers (I prefer towers over bookshelves). And i have finalized the avr to be Denon x1600 (Any suggestions / alternatives ?)

Auditioning is quite difficult , so i just have to buy them. I will building them in stages , ie will add sub later.

And at the moment ,i have narrowed down the Polk S30 over S35 as centre (will the S35 serve better).

Any suggestions would be greatly helpful for my purchase. Thanks.

I would maybe go with the S55 or S60 if your budget allows. Definitely the S30 over the S35. While the S35 has more drivers, they're only 3" each - I have read people describing the sound as being "thin", especially for male voices. As long as you don't crank the volume, the X1600H should be okay to drive those tower speakers. It might help if you included a sub, that way you can take some of the load off of the towers, and let the sub handle a lot of the grunt work. It will allow you to play at a slightly higher volume, too since the towers won't draw as much power if they were set to large/full band.
Do you have a top budget? The Polk LSiM 705 tower sometimes goes on sale for very good price at Adorama. Those would be a step up from the S series and could possibly get them at close to what the S series cost.

Watch slickdeals.com and here at AVS in the deals thread.

If you are choosing between the Polk offerings, the S55 is said to be the best of the three.
If you are only sitting 6 ft back -- then I would go lower than the S60 towers

Lots of towers in that price range. Look at Chane A5.4, Q Acoustics 3050i, Emotiva T2, to name a few.

Internet direct will offer better quality components for less money. They focus more on functionality and sound quality than aesthetics though. If budget permits Chane A5.4 & A2.4 would be an good choice. Alternatively, you can go with Emotiva T1's & C1, though won't play as loud as the Chane.

I recommend going with the Denon X3500. You'll get audyssey XT32, dual sub HT, pre-outs should you want to add an external amp and pretty much all the same features as this year's models.

If you want to save some Extra money and are OK with refurbished, this one.

The Denon 1600 is a very nice receiver.

Where are you located in case there is a good manufacturer/vendor near you.
