Poll: Buy now or wait for 09 models?

What do you guys think is way to go right now, looking at best Technology to Value ratio?

Buy now on 08 closeout models, for me would be the Panny PX80 or PZ80 or Vizio VXT505(either the Costco deals or potentially lower elsewhere?) and/or other Superbowl deals to come.

Wait to buy 09 models for new features? Wild card here is what the pricing for 09 models will look like? Was the 55" vizio 240hz LCD at $1999 a hint or just Vizio grabbing attention?

or just Flip a coin?

I have a setup where a TV that has Internet connectivity would, or could, be useful, especially down the road. My house is in a Fiber Optic neighborhood and uses IPTV software(in my HR-20i dvr box), so some of the newer models coming out may interest me, unless they cost too much.

If I new for sure by fall 09, TV prices would be way down as some have predicted I would wait it out till then. I fear inflation is coming though, eventually, which will either offset that or make prices skyrocket. Who knows though.

I'm affraid I've been caught in that trap now after reading all the 'potential' improvements that may be coming with the new models and I'm going to wait. Plus, that new 54" size has really caught my interest

If you are on a tight budget, I think you should wait especially if you are interested in online contents on your TV (without a HTPC). According to D-nice and others (on the Panasonic CES thread), those new PDP will have quite a bit of improvement over the current generations while price should be staying the same or very competitive. But if you are considering Pioneer's high-end stuff, then I probably won't wait since they didn't even announce anything new for PDP.
the Panny G10 sounds like a great TV coming out, wish I knew what the price would be though. If its over $2k for 50" for it or its lower tier models then I will go ahead and buy.

the 50" PX or PZ can be had for $1kish or less depending on the model, deal and bargaining, both deliver great pictures so the new features likely aren't worth an extra Thousand bucks. but if they are priced more like $1500 out of the gate, it may be worth it.

I'm looking at Panasonic mainly, watched the CES video on the new ones at Cnet. Sounds great.

If I can swing $700 to $1000 on a deal for the 50PX80 or 50PZ80 this month(or possibly the Vizio XVT505).

Or, will the new models not cost that much more, 50" will be sub-$2k with alot more features?

I'm looking at best Value for the money ratio, with whatever I buy. Looking at the current Panny's the picture is great on all of them, which is the big thing for me.

I think this is a dumb poll until you know what the 2009 prices are.

will we know those prices, before the 08 closeout and Superbowl deals are over?

Thats at the heart of it, if not its 'flip a coin' for me
I'd like to know when these "super bowl deals" start. We're 2 weeks out and I have seen nothing but across the board price INCREASES in the last 3 weeks.

The XBR6 comes to mind. Was near 23-$2400 a week before X-mas and now the big-boxes locally have it at $2999 and $3499, respectively. Sure you can find it online for $2600ish, but the B&M's were sig BELOW that weeks ago.

I'm patiently waiting for the blowout.

James
yeah, if they are keeping inventories low, they may not have a need to have big sales like past years?

right now I think the Costco version of the PX80 and pZ80 panny's are pretty good deal. I've read on here people who claim they got CC down ALOT from their listed price, but thats situational probably and a pain to mess with.

the Vizio VXT505 for 1199 base seems like a great price, and maybe Amazon is about to run some of their deals again with a free BR player or something
Here is what I would do. If your bedroom or any room in the house needs an upgraded TV I would go for the 42PX80U or 50PX80U for Superbowl family room TV. You then should upgrade to the 12G Panasonic and place that within your family room.

Chris
you mean down the road, upgrade to the new and then move this TV to the bedroom?

My situation is I don't 'need' the thing now, but do later this year. Thus my dilema on picking when to buy and I do want to stay at $1k or less for 50".

I have a roomate who will be moving sometime between now and early summer(up in air) who has a 40" Samsung LCD where this will go. Plus I have a Theater room with a Projector, 100" screen....that can be used as well to hold me over.

I'm thinking, but not sure(thus the thread) that the time to get a $1k or less 50" quality Plasma is now and once the 08 models are gone the 09's will not be there($1k price point) until black friday? Inflation possibility and/or major price cuts in 09 being the wildcard.
Well that was my initial thought, but if you can wait a few months the TC-P50X10 will be released shortly and should be within your price range. If you have a Projo with 100" screen I would wait. Your Superbowl plans would look much bigger on that setup...

As far as pricing, it will gradually lower as time continues. The economy has an influence on the price, but most of all competition is what drives sales.

yeah, I was thinking they could price the new Panny Plasma's starting at $1400 to $1500 for entry models, out the gate and have to wait for it to get down to $1k. no idea on pricing for this year is problem I guess I have.
I would wait for the 2012 models to show up, they will blow away what is out now.

Honestly, this stuff will literally drive you out of your mind. For me, there's so many reputable online dealers now offering great deals from time to time that it's just a matter of waiting for one and jumping on it.

And really, what's a few hundered dollars on a tv you'll likely have for a 3-4+ years anyway? Do an exhaustive search and you'll do fine right now.

James
Lastly, speaking as a guy as crazy as most on these boards, I think people are only kidding themselves if they expect displays (especially plasma) to make anything more than a marginal "jump" in PQ. Now, weigh that against the increased dollars you're spending, and take an honest look at where you're standing. I have my choice narrowed down to (2) displays. First "super deal" I see, I'm moving on it and not looking back.

Good luck to you, sir

James
A couple of the big reasons I'm waiting is the fact that the power consumption is lower, display is thinner, blacks are darker and there is finally a 54" set available for plasmas. So I'll hold out unitl next sept to let prices level.

on XBR6, keep eye on Amazon. They had a deal over the weekend and for awhile a couple weeks ago on it(40, 46 or 52") plus a Sony BR player.

I figured it up, after selling the BR player for net or $275, one of the deals would've got the 52" XBR for around 2200 shipped.

CC has it for 3400 right now.

whats keeping me from that, and I'm no economist or expert, but the Fed is printing money trying to create Inflation on purpose to fight the Deflation we are currently in. So my fear is something happens this year and price of everything goes up because of it.

I will never buy in a big chain again. After buying and saving such a good online experience with my last tv I'll never waste money on a chain retailer again. Their markup is just way to high. Plus I don't even compare prices in store to online.
