1153 Views 19 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  No Clue
Is it okay to clean my 8 oz Paragon popper with windex & a paper towel? I wipe the kettle with a damp paper towel when it cools down, just wondering if windex is okay. thanks

Do not like the fragrance components left behind.
I agree with Mike..I bought some popcorn machine cleaner I believe of ebay..It's an aerosol foam. works and leaves no fragrance behind.

Plus Windex might have ammonia which is bad for the plexiglass doors.

Get the Gold Medal "WatchDog" (or something) cleaner for cleaning concessions equipment. It is odor free and ammonia free (safe on plexi).

Never, never, never use Windex on plexiglass - although, as we learned from "My Big, Fat Greek Wedding" it's good for everything else. :D I use dry paper toweling after each popping to keep the popper (including the kettle) clean. Every so often I use dishwashing soap and water to clean the entire popper, including the plexiglass, but NOT the kettle (for which there are specialized cleaners if that's ever necessary).

I'll second what htomei said - I just wipe the kettle with a paper towel, and use dishwashing liquid and water with a sponge for everything else...

What will Windex do to pelxi-glass?
I think it permanently fogs it all up. That would suck.

Forgot about that dwight, Good ol' soapy water does work extremely well for cutting the grease.

I have been using a dry paper towel to clean mine and it does an ok job on the plexiglass. I also do the same to wipe out the kettle.

The problem is it seems like the kettle always smokes a little when heating it up for the next batch. I am concerned this might set off the smoke detector that I am plannning to install nearby.

Anyone else have this problem and if not, how do you get around it?

Steve
I get this alittle too if i don't REALLY get all the oil, or salt out..Not a big deal for me, as it usually goes away quickly and it really doesn't smell at all.

Usually after I pop a batch of the flavored popcorn (caramel, cherry. etc.) I have to use Kettle Kleen to get all of the baked on sugar off. This stuff will make your kettle look like new. I also use Watch Dog glass cleaner. It doesn't have ammonia and it does a good job. The downside to using Windex is that the ammonia is toxic.
I also use "KettleKlean" every once in awhile for a clean slate.

I must be lucky or something, because I NEVER get smoke in my machine, even if it has barely been wiped by a paper towel.
I use the megapop 6oz prepacks and it seems sort of difficult to get all of the residue with a dry paper towel so I always have a little smoke at least. I don't know if it will be enough to set off the smoke detector or not because I haven't installed that yet.

Where can one purchase kettle kleen?

I wipe my machine down (including the kettle while hot) with unscented diaper wipes after each use and it works great. They stay moist in their plastic box next to the machine that way I'm not tempted to wait until later (which usually means the next time I decide to make popcorn). The Plexiglas is wet after wiping them down so polish them with a dry paper towel.

That's certainly innovative but it raises a few questions (not to mention eyebrows of anyone who sees them).

What's in them?

Steve,

I got the name wrong. It's called Heat n' Clean. It can be found on www.popthis.com. They also have the glass cleaner. They are found under cleaning supplies.
I use glass cleaner on the glass surfaces of the machine and soap and water on the Plexiglas doors.

I wipe the kettle down with a dry paper towel, then dab a small amount of oil on a paper towel and wipe the inside of the kettle down again. It really seemed to stop the un-invited odor that comes from the kettle as it heats up for popping.
