Portable DTV: Axion 7" LCD AXN-8701

Axion 7" LCD DTV comes with remote, ac and car power adapters, internal and external telescoping rod antenna. Available at NewEgg. Seems to be an improved clone of last year's Insignia NS-7HTV sold at Best Buy, and the Accurain portable #16-454 currently sold at Radio Shack. However the unit does not respond to all remote commands from the Insignia Remote, so it is slightly different as is the remote.

Performance seems to be the same or slightly better as the Insignia, poor with telescoping rod antenna but average to better with an outdoor antenna or a silver sensor. Has sticker on display: Caution! For Best Reception,Use Device with External Antenna Provided! No signal level meter like the Insignia. Internal Battery life is 1.5 to 2 hours. Improved OSD over the Insignia, no more switching between analog and digital stations via front panel button, channels are seamlessly integrated. The Axion handles aspect ratios for SD channels correctly where the Insignia does not. The analog/digital button on the Insignia has been replaced with "Wide" on the Axion that allows Horizontal stretching of analog and digital SD channels. Handles closed captioning, but must be turned on and off from the menu, CC not available on the remote. Excellent EPG, displays about 30 hours, and we send 48 so that's good.

Audio quality is very good for such a small set. Like the Insignia, can mute audio from remote but volume is a manual pot on the side of the unit. It receives all 3 of our audio pairs just fine, but does not indicate the proper language for the 3rd pair. A/V inputs on side.

Has CATV setting in menu, I have not tried on cable for QAM yet. One issue this unit seems to have just like the Insignia: it will not see one of our local DTV's on VHF Channel 11 using the same antenna that the Zenith DTT901 receives just fine. I have emailed Axion about this issue.

Let me know if you have any questions or anything I have missed.

Any A/V outputs?
Has Audio outputs,no video, same as Insignia.

Just finished scanning the local Time-Warner Cable feed, the Axion receives clear QAM's just fine. However, 20 or so of the QAM's here have no CVCT, so the Tv does not know what channel to call them. So they all appear as channel 1008, and cannot be entered directly with the remote. You can only channel up or down through the many channel 1008's. It does read clear OTA's with CVCT's just fine and displays the EPG properly.

I do beleive the internals are the same as the 10" Venturer LCD sold at Walgreens, tho I need to set them side by side to confirm. I will add another thread for that set time permitting.
