Thanks to this great forum i will be building my first HTPC.

However i'm trying to save a few dollars here and there and was wondering anyone knows if there are any drawbacks for using a external harddrive for internal use?

I have a few laying around and rather not buy some internals ones especially when it looks like the portable ones appears to be cheaper...

If you are still using it as a USB drive, the biggest drawback is that it will be slower. Most external drive these days is just slower internal drive in some type of an enclosure with a USB->PATA or SATA adapter.

They're all standard harddrives inside. Can't you just open it up and takeout the drive and just plug it into your SATA?

Thats what i was planning to do - just didn't know if there were any drawbacks to this...
