If I'm reading right, this approx. $99 VisionFC3 converter (on eBay) will allow us DVI guys to choose YPbPr output from our HDMI A1 units into a component input on our TV, but still enjoy the upconverting of SD dvd's, without the black crush/colorspace problem. To our my tech. forum members, are my assumptions correct?????

Digital DVI to VGA,Component Video Transcoder,Converter

BRAND NEW, IN BOX.

DVI-D is Digital only and VGA (svga) is analog only, so you cannot directly connect them without using this VisionFC3 conversion box.

I don't think it will work. The player has to believe there's a HDMI device on the other end and/or be convinced it should/can send YCbCr. Sending digital (already at PC video levels) RGB will just be converted to analog video. And it may only take 16-235 of the video that is now at 0-255 and make things worse yet. If you have one it's worth a try, I wouldn't spend any money on it just to try it.

Hi,

I agree with Larry, if you haven't purchased this yet, I wouldn't bother.

Isn't this merely converting DVI-D to analog component video? Its not like its magically overcoming handshaking problems while still maintaining the digital connection needed to permit upscaling.

The Toshiba players already have an analog component video output and although its true that they don't have the colorspace problems of the HDMI to DVI connection, neither will they support upconverting standard definition DVDs.

My guess is the best that you can expect is the same performance as the Toshiba's component video connection.

Well, I wouldn't dismiss it outright, even though buying it just to try it... That may be risky proposition (I would wait for some reviews, I guess). Reason I am saying it is that the process is certainly possible, I have LumagenHDP VP which physically has DVI-like connectors, but they CAN be set in software to "appear" to A1 as HDMI, requesting proper signal from it. It's all in the software
! No magic!

Also, if somebody is really interested, look into CRT FP forum, there are number of going discussions about similar devices, since CRTs are analog only, and of course present challenge as far as DVI/HDMI sources are concerned.

I bought and tried the FC4 (HDMI to component or rgb). I have posted before that it does what it says (strips HDCP so it will pass an upconverted signal over component). Everything is fine (480p) until I get to 1080i. The problem I see is that everything becomes much darker than 1080i on straight thru component (doing a compare on VE) and detail is lost. I tried changing the settings on my HDA1 but this does nothing. The data is there if I crank brightness but is so far off all other settings and inputs that I quit using it.

Hi Kris,

Does your Lumagen bypass the HDCP algorithms when its software "appears" to an HD-A1 as HDMI? Are you saying it is possible to permit upconverting copyprotected material without an HDMI handshake?

With regard to connecting analog displays to digital sources, I don't believe the issue is whether an analog device can be connected to a digital source, but rather can it be done and still permit upconverting copyprotected material.

Thanks guys for the input. I think I'll just put up with the colorspace issue until I get a new receiver (waiting on new models with HDMI ver. 1.3) with HDMI switching, later this year. I also plan to get a new 60" Sony SXRD (also waiting on ver. 1.3) maybe next year which will fix all problems, perhaps.
