Possible to get 5.1 Speakers under $1000?

5400 Views 54 Replies 27 Participants Last post by  gajCA
Hi all,
I am planning to spend a max of $1000 for Speakers - 2 Front, 1 center, 2 Rear & 1 Subwoofer.
Is it possible to get all these under $1000? If so, can you please recommend me the models?
BTW, mostly I will end up with a Receiver Yamaha RXV-585

Of course due to budget constraints, if I know impossible under $1000, I have no option other than postponing my decision to next year ;)

Room details:
Viewing distance from 120" screen to couch is roughly 17 feet.

This area is in finished basement with 'NO' sound proofing done in dry wall ;)

thanks in advance

Yes it’s possible. I’ve never heard RSL speakers but supposedly very good for the money. Here’s their 5.1 system.

Not a rhetorical question: would you regard the CG3 based system as adequate for a 17' (5m +) listening distance?

The CG3 is a nice speaker, but it has only a 4" woofer. The Speedwoofer is supposed to be good, but I'm not sure that it would work well in a large space.
RSL is a solid choice for that budget. Nice, all in one solution that gives you quality all around. Yeah, you could cobble together something else from multiple manufacturers, but it would only be different, not better.

You can get the Sony Core series. They sound very good to me.

Another option is Emotiva.

4 x B1's for L/R and surrounds
https://emotiva.com/collections/loudspeakers/products/airmotiv-b1

1 x C1 for center
https://emotiva.com/collections/loudspeakers/products/airmotiv-c1

$707 for the 5. part. Now the .1 part is where you want the absolute best you can afford. The RSL speedwoofer is very good for the price. For more impact the Monoprice 10 THX can sometimes be had around 425.00 which is a very good deal. Keep an eye out on the Deals thread. Rythmik and HSU both great to but a bit north of $500 for those nice subs.

Deals thread.

A pretty good sub is the Infinity R12 for $199.00 for a refurbished unit.

Not with your space. Either start with a solid 2.1 system or postpone it. You’ll end up upgrading multiple times (and spending much more money than you need to) as no system at this price range will be satisfactory in your space.

I’d start at $2500 for a space that big. You’ll need powerful speakers and even more powerful sub. All of which are not cheap.

That is a big space and ya know I spaced when I posted :)

You are a perfect candidate for DIY speakers that will fill that space with sound and be affordable. Check these HT speakers out at DIYSoundGroup. 5 of those and then build your own sub. Plenty of advice over at the DIY forum here.

Assuming this is all TV/HT and you aren't trying to do +85db ear-splitting volumes all the time, $1K actually is doable:

3 x NHT SuperOne, $300 shipped from Amazon
2 x NHT SuperZeros, $100 shipped from Amazon
1 x Hsu VTF-2 sub, currently on sale - $580 shipped from hsuresearch.com

NHT is a wise choice, not to mention if you wanted to play music through them at some point they are good for that also. :)
For just a few dollars more, $1159. you can get a HSU 5.1 Hybrid1 System.
Highly efficient they do great with little power. Dr Hsu demos them at audio shows with low power receivers to prove it.

I highly doubt you'll touch it for the money.

All I saw was 17’ viewing distance and I was like oh ho no!

Another recommendation that will give you a killer setup for slightly over $1k is to run active -- These speakers are bi-amplified with dynamics through the roof, they're highly accurate and transparent studio monitors with tons of clean output that you'd need for a room that large. Notice, I did not include a subwoofer because I believe you'd be better off saving money for something that will actually make a real difference in your room. I'd highly recommend going DIY if you can (for the most bang for your buck), if not save up for a subwoofer from JTR, Rhythmik, PSA, Seaton, DSS, etc.

I can tell you right now that it'd be extremely difficult to beat such a setup for the money... and I'd reckon this setup would put a lot more expensive 5 Ch. setups to shame as well. These speakers perform FAR above their price point. They replaced my B&W 805 D3s until I moved them to my desktop (And they outperformed them in every single way, I've never been so angry -- for spending so much on B&W Diamonds of course -- and happy -- for saving a ton of money while managing to discover such a speaker -- at the same time). I now use the 708Ps for my mains.

5 x JBL 308Ps (B-Stock from JBL w/ 5 Yr. Warranty @ $135/ea from ProAudioStar)

(For your surrounds, sure you can save even more money with the smaller 306Ps or 305Ps, but they're not too much less B-Stock or Used than the 308Ps and all matching speakers would be ideal anyway.)

Yamaha RX-A1050 ($500 from Accessories4Less -- Manufacturer Refurbished with 1 Yr. Warranty)
OR
Denon X3400H ($480 from Accessories4Less -- Manufacturer Refurbished with 1 Yr. Warranty)
(Both AVRs have preouts)

Add $213 for shipping.

Also, the VTF-1 Mk3 may not be enough sub for that space.

(I have Hsu CCB-8s for LCR, and four HB-1 Mk2s for my other 4 base speakers. My subs are two VTF-3 Mk5. I can't be accused of not liking Hsu products.)

A Hsu HB-1/HC-1 5.0 package ($799 + 157) plus a VTF-3 ($799 + 96) might be a good choice, but that's $1851.

There may be a $1k package that'd work in the OP's space, but I don't know what it is. This one would at least have a little more volume potential than the RSLs: https://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/bosbundle3/boston-acoustics-a-series-5.1.2-advanced-home-theater-speaker-package/1.html

Plenty of options at that price depending on how big of a sound you expect to get. Here's one more example of what is available at your price point. I've heard these at a demo and they were impressive for their size.
