A lot of people lack information about QAM and its availability. Maybe a thread like this will help. There are some links below to help people not familiar with QAM

Post your QAM info, here is mine

Tuner: Hauppauge 1600

Front End: Windows Media Center 7

Channels: 15
(locals, missing one HD channel)

Locale and provider: Vancouver, WA Comcast

What is QAM?

What Channels should I be receiving? Just enter your zip code here

this information is available...go to silicondust's webite to lookup how their HD Homerun will work in your area and I think it brings you to zap2it website....

I just know I've seen these threads years ago, so perhaps you were looking for updated info?

James,

1. The Wilkpedia article is somewhat misleading.

US OTA digial broadcasts use 8VSB modulation are required to have the actual program MPEG2 encoded using the ATSC digital resolution standards.

Most US cable digital broadcasts use QAM modulation and most of the actual programs are also MPEG2 encoded using the ATSC digital resolution standards.

2. AFAIK cable companies are only required to broadcast one unencrypted sub-channel from each high powered OTA digital broadcaster serving your Zip code. Therefore you will not receive via unencrypted QAM all the OTA digital 8VSB sub channels availalble to you with an antenna.

Silicondust's listings are from scans done by users, sorted by zip code. It's only as accurate as the last scan reported.

Zap2it is only to get the official channel names, since that is what media center used to use prior to TVpack and 7.

Using a Hauppauge HVR-1600 in Windows 7 Media Center. All channels tune although a few have signal issues. HD channels are fine while SD channels have bright flashes going thtrough them. Recorded TV shows aren't affected, only live.

Tuner: Hauppauge 2250

Frontend :Vista Media Center + TV pack

Locale and provider: San Francisco Bay Area, CA, Comcast

Channel: ~30 after automatic scan, 9 local HD channels.

Manually add other clear QAM channels gives total of 100+ SD channels.

I use my Samsung TV and Silicon dust as a reference. Of cause, I got to learn how to live with comcast change some of the channel every so often. Usually, I manually edit the channel setting to fix the guide.

Joe531,

Is your problem with live SD analog channels from your cable company or with live SD digital channels either OTA or from you cable company in clear QAM:

Live SD channels using clear QAM under Comcast. It's a very strange thing and I'm not sure what's causing it.

Joe,

At least your Comcast is leaving unencrypted some SD QAM channels in addition to not encrypting one OTA HD channel from each local broadcaster or are the clear QAM SD channes from local PBS stations. Can you provide one or two of the clear QAM SD channel numbers you able to get?

I checked on the tv downstairs and there are no flashes. Could this be a driver or codec issue?

edit:

I'm now getting serious flashing on CBS HD. Maybe also a driver problem? I'm using GeForce 8100 graphics with the latest drivers.

Since the problem only occurs with Live programs and not recorded it appears that there is an I/O IRQ conflict occuring between your tuner card and your graphics card. I sugggest changing the slot that the tuner card is in

QAM works for me!

Aver A180 (whitebox)

Windows 7 Media Center 32-bit

Time Warner Cable- Milwaukee, WI

I don't "pay" for cable necessarily but I do subscribe to their high speed internet service. I put a coax splitter on the incoming line and put one end to the cable modem and the other to my A180. I dont get any of the premium/standard stations this way but I do get all of my local SD & HD broadcasts this way. The only advantage I have here is that I am not prone to bad recption from an antenna. I get all the major channels this way but I **can** pick up more if I plug an antenna in and go ATSC OTA....things like Telemundo, PAX, etc. I dont really care for those anyway.

SageTV V6

HD Homerun

Cox Communicatiions Basic

channels: ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, WC and a few others I really don't care for (PBS).

I used the instructions on the Silicon Dust website for SageTV and everything went smooth. Sage's program guide has been flawless, so far.

That appears to be the case that you if you can not get get any analog or digital (QAM) channels. However you can probably get more HD OTA channels and better HD PQ with an antenna then you would get over clear QAM cable.
