I'm thinking of getting Direct TV. However, my homeowners association has this thing against the Dishes. I got the FCC rules on this issue already so I'm covered there.

However, IF I decide to just place the dish on my townhouse patio instead of my roof, I need to know whether a large tree that is blocking parts of the southern sky will affect my reception. I'd rather not put it on my patio, but in the interests of avoiding a fight w/ my HA, I need to find out whether the tree issue is really an issue at all....

Thanks for any help

Tomorrow, it just so happens http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/biggrin.gif , the Directv satellites relative to a receiving antenna will briefly find themselves directly in front of the sun. This will cause an outage or signal degradation to reception, but the phenomenon can be used to determine placement of a dish antenna. Use the Solar outage program found at http://www.nmia.com/~roberts/referenc.html to find out when the event will occur at your location. At that time check to see if the antenna can see the sun. Any obstructions would show up as shadows!
