power conditioner/console for plasma tv's

933 Views 3 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Lazybones
I am not sure if this is the right forum to post this question.

I have just a few electronics components including a TV that I want to protect from power surges. Do I need to have a power conditioner or console like Belkin's pureAv or someone elses. Can you let me know if this is a neccessity to prevent damage? If so, which are the ones I should be looking at to purchase?

Thanks.

A surge protector, prevents damage from a large spike in power.

A UPS (battery backup) protects against brown outs (loss of power).

A power conditioner smooths out minor fluctuations in power to reduce noise.

Some devices combine the features of more than one of the above.

Well basically I think power conditioners are a total wast of money unless you have bad power in your home and have ultra high end equipment where you might notice an enhancement to image and sound.

At a MINIMUM you need a surge protector.. basically a power bar that will absorb a strong jolt, all equipment attached needs to be on one of these at least, or it is sort of pointless.

A UPS will keep things running for a short time when power is lost, all UPS sustems I know of include Sure protection, as well as provide some level or conditioning (but not to a high level).

I am cheap, so I am not going to make any recommendations on a brand / model to purchase.
