Recently we’ve been having power surges here in southern California – power will shut down for a second, then turn back on. I’ve started to wonder what real danger power surges pose for my replay 5000 and 3000 units. Has anyone lost a unit due to power surge?

If power drops while the unit is recording it can easily corrupt the hard disk.

An UPS will remove that worry from your life.

Sudden power off / on can cause HD corruption. It happened to me. I finally wrote off trying to revive my 5040 last night. It is getting an upgraded HD (250GB)tonight, been putting this off for awhile now. Time to take the plung.

A loss of power on a 5040 can also make the tuner not work, this can be fixed by unplugging it again.

I have an APC 350VA UPS that I got for $20 (after $10 easy rebate) from Staples, on all my replays and cordless phone bases.

thanks for the responses. I just put a new 200 gig western digital hard drive in yesterday!! I'll go out and by a UPS protector. I have one for my computer, but I guess its time to get two more.

That Staples sale still on James? :)

Not the same UPS on sale, but they have a similar one for $35, has a higher VA/runtime too. Take a look on the website.
