I have a SA 8000 PVR in the bedroom. Just too noisy at night with all the thrashing the drive does even when it's not "turned on". If I put a timer switch on the power cord, off at 11:30pm and on at 8:00 am is there any downside?

You'll substantially reduce the life of the unit by doing that, but I suppose if you don't own it, that doesn't matter. Of course, the SA8000 won't record or retrieve any guide data during the time it is unplugged.

I unplugged mine once overnight due to thunderstorms. It crashed twice after it rebooted. One thing to remember is not use it until the time display is up.
