Hi All,

I have a Maxent MX-42VM10 42" Plasma EDTV hooked up to my RADEON 7500 via an RGB Cable. I have the newest catalyst driver installed. I am able to get 1280 X 720 resolution displayed pretty well, however, Windows Fonts look like crap. Everything else looks awesome. If I display graphics of any kind, they look great. The display's native resolution is 852 X480.

Do I need different timings or am I just using the wrong resolution... or do I need to buy that HDTV adapter thing?? I am lost. I have played with Powerstrip for a while now and I just don't seem to be getting anywhere.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Welcome to the forum!

As a rule of thumb, digital displays, like your plasma, look best when fed their native resolution. In your case it is 852x480. If you feed a higher or a lower res. your display will scale to its native res. and hence likely induce scaling artifacts ("crappy Windows fonts").

You could check out a DVI connection, if supported by your display. This should yield a sharper/crisper image.

In any case I would get your video card to produce 852x480 (you might need the help of Powerstrip).

Thanks for the replies! (and the welcome)

I think I am reluctant to use 852 X 480 because it really cuts down on the "Real Estate".

My Display does not have a DVI input, so I think I might be out of luck on that.

Right now, with the 1280 resolution, I have had to tweak the powerstrip application quite a bit to prevent over/under (I'm not sure which) scan.

My Plasma's manual has all of the scan settings for each supported resolution, so I could plug them right into powerstrip, but when I tried to use them for the 1280 settings, they didn't look as good as when I just tweaked it live.

Should I just suck it up and use 852 X480? I hate to crowd everthing that bad.

I have a Toshiba RPTV, so it's considerably different, but what I did was used a 480p resolution for the desktop, and a 1000i (basically 1080 resolution reduced to deal with overscan) for video. Yes the 480p is small, but it's readable and I don't do that much in 480p other than click icons to go to video programs or view a few web pages.

OK,

I set my resolution to 848 X 480 (I can't set the horizontal resolution to 852 because it is not a multiple of 8) and it looks pretty good, but the fonts are still a little bit fuzzy. Does anyone know of anything else I can try in powerstrip to clean it up a little?

Thanks!!
