I had a Sony DSS at my house in Florida. I don't remember the receiver model, but it was the top Sony when I bought it on 1997. PQ was as to be expected from DSS.

Anyway, I moved to Texas a while back and currently live in an apartment complex that offers SBC's version of DirecTV instead of the local TW cable feed. SBC supplies SAT-B55 receivers (the little half-pint units), which gets tied to a community dish antenna. I'm using the s-video connectors as I did in Florida. There is a diplexer in use to split out the local channel feed from the DSS feed.

The picture quality is really lousy. I get pixilation, clay faces, and some distorted images that look like minor ghosting one would see using a rabbit-ears antenna. Some channels are worse than others, of course.

Is there a PQ compromise using these cheaper receivers? I always thought the PQ was the same across the line, and that the only differences were features. Could the community dish antenna system be a problem?

Thanks.
