PQ: Searchers vs. Shrek-3, etc.

I have a SanyoZ4 projector and an A3 player.

I rented Shrek the Third since it's #1 on the PQ list. I thought it looked...okay. Sure, some particularly bright scenes were popping, but, overall, I feel like something is wrong.

It was really bringing me down re my recent A3 purchase. Then I loaded The Searchers. When I look at The Searchers, it just shouts HD. Every reason we want HD, why old films are remastered & transfered, yaddah yaddah, wonderful!

Hot Fuzz was also razor sharp (and great AQ) as well. Shrek was disappoing to me on both PQ & AQ.

What am I missing? Is Pixar stuff made for Plasmas?

Are Projectors & Screens for film lovers and high quality transfers?

Shrek isn't Pixar, it's Dreamworks. Pixar is Blu-ray only and it looks fantastic.

The studio is irrelevant. It's a product of computer graphics.

Hence the question...

Ah, I thought you were confused as to who made Shrek 3

I don't have a projector, but I do take my son to CGI in theaters. I have a plasma. Yes, CGI movies look better at home, but so does everything. I'm not sure why CGI movies would favor plasma over digital projectors in general, I just assume that most theaters are setup poorly.

You are missing 1,152,000 pixels. The Sanyo Z4 has a resolution of 1280x720 pixels. HD DVD movies are in 1920x1080 resolution. Buy a FullHD projector.
I was actually a little disapointed in Shrek3 myself....and I have 65"s of FullHD

I agree with your assessment of Shrek 3. I think that in general CGI looks pretty damn good on standard def-that's why it often ends up in peoples demo reels, so the jump to HD might not seem as impressive as some of the non CGI stuff.

For the record I'm watching my HD-DVDs on a panasonic ae700 @ 106" from 11'.
Shrek 3 had a very earthy and toned down palette. The transfer did look Amazing, but next to Cars or Ratatoullie it doesn't have that colorful "wow" factor.
Just a quick thank you (with commentary):

FrancescoP made me laugh. Yes, I am missing 1.1M pixels but the projector is less than 2 years old. Didn't plan on replacing it quite so soon. 1080p projectors were not to be had for $2k 2 years ago.

...But you do raise my question that adding the A3 to a projector that already upscaled SDs fairly well was a modest improvement, not a quantum leap.

Sky and Phil shared my observations on Shrek so that helps.

Almostgoth - what's your screen material and gain? Also, is that a high def cello?

I'm using Dalite HCCV over stretcher bars. I beleive it's 1.2-1.3 gain. The cello is far from high def, but it's sweet tone can be attributed to the tears of the kidnapped chinese children that manufactured it

FWIW, I was not particularly impressed with Shrek3 and would not rate it anywhere near my top 10 in PQ.
I don't know man, perhaps it is your tv. Shrek 3 is just stunning on my LCD. My daughter is watching it right now as I type this.

How big is your LCD?

I bought both a MITS 46231 then a TOSH XA2 back in Feb 2007. I watched a few HD DVD's and was impressed. However, I rented the HD DVD Searchers from Netflix and it was the first HD DVD that blew me completely away. OUTSTANDING!! After sending back the rental I went out and bought a copy.
I also thought Shrek 3 was a bit underwhelming when it comes to PQ. Not bad by any means, in fact its great......just thought it would be as good as other animated HD-DVD's like Happy Feet or Corpses Bride.
Shrek 3 is not even close to the top of computer animated high def discs (HDDVD & BD). Pixar wins hands down. However, try Corpse Bride (I know, stop motion not CGI) on HDDVD and you will not be disappointed!
Actually, for some eye popping animation, I'd recommend the Bee Movie trailer on the Shrek 3 HD DVD. Pretty astounding if I recall.

No reason to expect more than a modest improvement. The resolution of the actual data on the disc is still 480, no matter how high you upscale it. The A3 may be doing a better job than your projector at upscaling and deinterllacing to 720p, but neither one can actually create new picture out of thin air. They're both just filling in the spaces between the lines with data from the adjacent lines. I've seen plenty of 720p displays on which upscaled SD-DVDs looks as good as on most 1080p displays.
