PQ settings, where to start? DVD software or projector?

I am sorry if this question has been asked, and answered, several times ... but I cannot for the life of me find anything on this. The ATI patch, tweak, hate, love, flame, support threads are endless!

I am a newbie on the HTPC setup for the DVD software player. I previously used a DVDO, but after researching this forum I have made the move to HTPC. I am trying to figure out the ins and outs of the ATI tweaking and setup. My biggest question right now seems very basic to me, but it is the only topic I haven't seen any info on:

I have a VT540 that allows contrast and brightness control when the VGA port is used for RGB input (color / tint controls are available when other inputs are used). This makes sense to me, but my software DVD players, and DScaler, also have controls. Which controls do I manipulate?!?!? Do I set the pj to a 'default' setting and then tweak each of the software controls, using the test patterns ... or what?

Also, I have found good "basics of ATI player setup" threads and the dtvmax.com FAQ ... but is there a definitive reference for all Radeon tweaks and such? It is such a widely talked about subject but a lot of it overlaps and is hard to decipher what is obsolete! 0IRE patch, wandering control fixes, scoped settings, gamma settings (what is gamma, by the way!), etc.

Thanks for the help!

I found the Radeon FAQ thread but it doesn't seem like it is too thorough and a lot of the links are dead (don't know if this is because of the new forum software?).

Also, found a regesitry patch on digitalconnection.com, but didn't see any explanation on what it actually does! Does anyone else feel my pain!! I am sure I am not the first on this one ... :)

SpoonMan,

I hope this helps, the registry patch sets the black level to 0IRE on the Radeon dvd 4.1. and some aditional adjustments such as gamma. try a search under 0IRE patch radeon

I adjusted my PJ brigthness/ contrast using the Avia disk and then leave it alone.

Carlos ...

thanks for the reply. So, what you are recommending is to apply a registry patch that sets the 0IRE and that sets the video settings to the 'desired' settings (gamma, color, contrast, etc) ... and then calibrate the contrast/brightness of the projector?

Does setting the video settings with the registry patch keep the same settings (slider controls) from 'wandering'?

What is the recommended setup for the WinDVD player?

Good luck figuring this one out. I wrestled with this for a while, but It's really just trial and error and what the best result is that you are able to achieve. I have a DLS8 and found that I run contrast at about 75% and brightness at about 40%. The problem with using AVIA for the projector is that you are taking the default of the dvd software as the baseline for your projector. This may or may not be the case. Nevertheless, it's a good starting point, but I found that the results from Avia on my DLP were too bland for what I really liked. I ended up boosting contrast in the end.

Hope this helps
