I'm about to order an AE100 from ********** and was wondering whether the double boxing and insurance is worth the money. If I bought the insurance ($24), does that mean that the unit will be replaced if it is damaged or lost in shipment? What happens if I don't get the insurance and the package is damaged? Would I lose my money and who would I have to deal with if this happens? I guess the double boxing will keep it from getting bounced around as much during shipping and maybe I wouldn't necessarily need the insurance. Any thoughts or experiences?

I got my Sharp Z9000 from ********** 2 weeks ago double box with insurance and I had no problems. They put bubble wrap and newpaper, the sharp box inside was flawless ;-) So far I'm very happy with my purchase. I did get a bill from DHL yesterday for $30 to cover customs costs but otherwise no surprises.

Thomas F,

Insurance will _not_ cover you if the unit is damaged during shipment. Not for projectors I am fairly certain of this. Insurance does cover you if they loose the AE.

I would definitelly recomend double boxing.

Double box by all means. Keeps pj safe and generic outer box attracts less attention.

Newjack, only $34 for Sharp Z9000? I got a customs bill for $54 for my AE100!! I thought it was based on the declared value - I believe the 9000 is well over twice the cost of the AE100? I wonder what gives.

Oh, and yes, I had mine double boxed and insured - no problems and would recommend. I recall reading one post here a while back someone said that they're double boxed packed arrived with a good bit of damage on the outter box, but the AE100 was fine. So, I certainly paid the extra and am glad I did. Then again, my package arrived with the outter box pretty much spotless so I guess I could've skipped the extra cost - but do you really want to gamble $1300?

Well I think I beat all of you in the darn customs charges from ********** on a Sharp Z9000.. $255!!! Why so much over yours ?! I don't know, any help as to why would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris

I'm surprised some of you are getting bills from DHL for customs as a couple of persons I know that bought Marantz/Sharp from Mr. Kwon were not charged anything. I wonder why this is, or if someone is trying to turn an unrecorded spot to their wallet.

Here's my scenario:

Yes, double-boxed.

Yes, insurance.

Yes, Marantz arrived okay.

No, I don't know how because the INTERIOR OEM styro packing was trashed.

No, bill from customs. Whew! :D

Looks like I was one of the unlucky ones -- just got a bill from DHL for $250 for customs charges on my double boxed 9000. :(

I would definately dispute it. Claim that other customs offices are claiming it to be part of a larger system, and in and of itself it is NOT a standalone product. Also, this could be as a result of an onslaught/influx of projectors from overseas that reached enough critical mass for them to 'take notice'.

The minute portion of my brain known as paranoia also suggests that it is the projector manufacturers telling on us, but thats just the minute portion and certainly does not represent the whole of my brain. :D

On my AE-100 purchase:

Yes for insurance.

No for double boxing.

Projector arrived perfect with one small dent on corner of box.

No customs bill (yet).

I'd do it just the same if I had to do it over.

I wonder if it might be worth getting a formal ruling/interpretation from the customs office!?! No sense and making a unknown condition stay as is. At least in the end if they do implement a custom's fee globally on projectors then they, and we, can estimate the added costs up-front and not worry about a mystery bill after the fact.

Any got the custom's office email contact handy? :)

you want to protect your projector in shipping. Do the Double box.

Just the handling and jarring can damage it and that damage may not show up for a while. I know these bulbs tend to be fragile and maybe rough shipping is helping to shorten their lives.
