I've never set up a surround system before so I could be doing something wrong so be patient with me please.

I have a Harmon Kardon 520 receiver hooked up to a DVD player using a digital coaxial cable. The receiver is receiving all five channels and the LFE signal. I then run the signal from the sub out on the receiver to the line input of one of the polk 1000T speakers (these are tower speakers with built in subs, with a RCA input on the back) and then to the other. I believe the sub is powered because it needs to be plugged into the wall. If I set the front speakers to "small" and turn the sub option on through the receiver no base goes to the speakers. I've checked and using any combo of RCA cables I have and either speaker I get no base. What is the best way to check if it is the speaker, receiver, or cable? I have no extra sub or I would try that. Thanks

I am coming out of the purple "preout subwoofer" jack on the reciever shown here:

I am connecting to these speakers:

I am using two runs of this cable (25ft and 12ft) the 25ft from receiver to speaker sub input of tower speaker 1, 12ft from speaker 1 output to speaker 2 input:
