I bought the 40" Proscan LCD from Costco and just set one of them up. Well, actually I bought two of them.

I have it hooked up to my Scientific Atlanta 4250 HDTV box via HDMI.

The HD picture is stunning, we love it. The SD picture is also "pretty good" but here is the problem.

When viewing in SD there is what appears to be distortion for lack of a batter word at the top 1/2" of the TV. Almost as if the picture isn't quite tall enough and it's especially noticeable when the picture is dark at the top.

I hope this makes sense.

Post pictures of the screen with various content.

Sounds like you are seeing the embedded closed caption data. Used to be something called overscan that would hide the edges of the picture. Now Tv's show every pixel all the way to the edges so the embedded closed caption data becomes visible. The only real solution is to see if your Tv can zoom/stretch/re-center the picture to hide the top edge so you can't see the CC data.
