Problem with A3 and Smallville Season 5

1253 Views 3 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  bobgpsr
I have watched the first four seasons of Smallville in SD in the past two weeks. I tried to start season 5 on HD today and I got a "SYSTEM ERROR" on the first and only the first disc of the season. It gets past the WB start up screen (WB in gold letters and clouds in the background) then when it tries to load the promo for HD DVD it displays the SYSTEM ERROR and quits. All the other discs play ok. My wife has already watched this season and didn't have any problems with this disc. I washed it with hot water and it didn't help. I took the season set back to BB and exchanged for a new one. I got the same results.

I tried updating FW via CD-R (Maxell) recorded at the slowest speed(16x), but it says the disc is not dvd format and it can't read it. I am trying now via ethernet to update the FW. If this doesn't work should I exchange the unit? I would rather do anything I could to fix it myself before sending it back.

My wife and I have watched about 50-60 HD DVD's on this A3 and the only disc we have a problem with is King Kong. Sometimes it won't load right.

That's about it, any suggestions?

Thanks,

John

The first instinct is to try washing the disc, then if that fails, try boiling it.

If the issue still persists, try to exchange the discs.
Still didn't work after FW update but I deleted the WB persistant storage and it is now working great!? Weird...

I had exactly the same issue and the same solution on both a XA1 and a XA2. Clearing persistant storage on both machines enabled them to play disc 1 of Season 5.
