Problem with H20 and local channels

744 Views 13 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  AAF
Starting yesterday we have had a weird issue with our H20. When you use to choose just a local channel you would get the SD version and you would have to go the guide for the HD version. That was great for grandmother since she does not know how to use the guide. Well know it is swaped you had to go the guide to get the SD channels. Does anyone know of a fix for this? I have even removed the HD channels from my custom guide and just left the SD channels and you still go to the HD channels when you press channel 2,5,7, or 32.

The question (problems) is somewhat unclear. Your local SD station carries HD content when the network is sending HD to the local station. Otherwise, during the non-prime hours, the local station is broadcasting in 480i. My local station for CBS is 6-1, for example.
What the issue is that the HD channels are taking priority over the SD channels. So the only way you can choose a SD channel is by going to the guide. When you press a number for a local channel like 5 you get the HD channel not the SD channel. When I first got the box when you pressed 5 you would get the SD channel and not the HD channel and that is how I liked it.
Why do you want the SD channel as a priority? In other threads, most people wanted the HD channels first. The HD channel broadcasts the same content as the SD.

And you don't have to use the guide. If you REALLY want to watch SD (still no clue why), you can just hit the ChUp button and it will take you to the SD channel.
For me I would not mind the HD priority. It is for my grandmother that we take care of. For her she is not very tech minded and the only know how to press the number keys for the most part. Last time I tryed with the channel up it just took me to the next HD station. I guess I will have to try that again and see if that might work for her though.
I go to the 6-1 local CBS station; at that particular time it may be broadcasting 480i programming or it may be broadcasting network 1080i programming. It is the same station. Again, sorry, if I do not understand your question.

Your H20 is defaulting to the HD channels? Isn't that the idea! Why watch SD when you have HD? Tell your grandmother she will be able to see them better and forget about it.
For the ChUp trick to work you need to have both listed in your favorites list.

I'm still kind of at a loss as to what the problem is. Why doesn't she want to watch the HD channel instead of the SD? Don't they show the same thing?
In local digital channels, the digital channel is THE HD channel as well. At certain times it is broadcasting in 480i and, at certain times, it is broadcasting in HD, 1080i or 720p) (from its' network). You can not view analog stations with H20 but it would have same programming as the digital stations (in most cases).
The problem is many of the shows that she watches are still SD shows.

Still wondering why this is a problem? The show will still be broadcast on the digital channel, just much clearer.
Conclusion: Grandmother has no real issue. Merry Christmas.
Is this a "The picture doesn't fill the screen" or "Why are there black bars on the picture?" 'problem'?

AV geeks meeting real world grandmothers who could care less about HD, fancy remotes, and sub channels....I see the making of a great sitcom.
