Problem with new Hitachi 65F710A

706 Views 12 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Cython
I'm having the weirdest problem with my new 65F710A. I'm getting moderately faint, slowly rolling, diagonal lines through my picture when I feed a 720P signal into the component inputs.

I don't get this when feeding a 480P, 480I, or 1080I signal through the Component inputs or when feeding a 480I or 1080I signal through the HDMI input. (I have no source for 720P HDMI so I can't check that combo). I've tried multiple sets of cables and my component source (Xbox360) doesn't show this problem on either of 2 other HD displays I've tried it on.

If anyone has any suggestions for me to try I would appreciate it. Hopefully I can correct this before I call hitachi and start the warranty process. Thanks for any advice

any suggestions? Sorry for the bump
Looks like you covered all the bases. The only thing you could possibly do is try to get your hands on another 720p source. That will verify if the Tv truely has a problem.

Well... the warranty repairman came today. Here is my general summary of what happened :(

He hooked up a signal generator to my tv and everything looked fine. Although his signal generator can't do any progressive signals.

He says that basically (paraphrasing) my TV is too good to run my Xbox 360 or my Onkyo DVD player. He says that the allowed tolerances in the signal quality are very tight on my TV. I asked him why my 360 shows 720P perfectly on my friends Hitachi 65S700 and my other friends Infocus SP4805. He said that they were lower quality units and if my TV was lower quality it would look fine also.

He suggested I run my 360 into an RF adapter and connect to the TV through Coaxial cable. Therefore only being viewable at 480i

He spouted off something about Co-Channel interference and said that there was nothing wrong with the TV and there was nothing I could do to make my 360 play on my TV without the lines in 720P other than sell this TV I bought a week ago and buy a different one. He suggested a Samsung since they "have sloppy enough tolerances that they will run about anything".

After pleading with him to find SOMETHING I could do to make this work he suggested I call Samsung and get updated firmware and "mabey that could fix it". I called them and found I already have the latest firmware.

The repairman wasn't really "rude" he just seemed to make up his mind in 5 minutes and it was gospel truth with no chance of being fixed.

Can anyone else help me? Or am I really just screwed?

why are you running it at 720p anyway?? why not 1080I the x-box 360 should output at 1080i since this is the tv's default setting. also do you have an upconvert 1080i dvd player ?? if so run it at 1080i as well. trust me the picture will be better at 1080i then 720p. you do have the hitachi 65f10A right? oh one more thing 360 has 1080i output right i can't remember the specs on it. in general you should have your tv set at 1080I for all inputs as i have found the picture is better on all signals cable sd and hd feeds, dvd. hope this helps
I actually forgot to mention in my update that after looking closer... the lines are there at 1080I as well... they just don't jump out at you as much as in 720P. They are also there at 1080P but very very faintly. I agree that 1080I looks better on this TV in general. I have a couple issues with this however...

A) I've had this TV 10 days and don't think it should be functioning this way. I didn't buy a wal-mart special because I wanted something that would perform better than that. I don't think I should have to "live with" something like this.

B) I'm afraid that if the repairman was wrong and it really is a problem with the TV... that other problems could manifest later from it... likely after 366 days of ownership.

Yes, the Xbox 360 does output at 720P and 1080I but the games are all native 720P so I either run the native source signal from the 360 or run the signal in the TVs native resolution. I don't know which is the best choice... but I shouldn't have to choose only one. Thanks for the advice however.

Plain and simple....the repair man is out....of....his....mind. Run the 360 through an RF adapter!! TV is too good for the 360??!! Signal generator can't send progressive signals....ummmmm Was he he seriously there to try and help you??!! I won't fault you for not realizing the absurdity of his statements as you are/were only looking for help. I suggest you demand another more "experienced" repairman come out again. As far as setting the 360 to 720 or 1080i, ONCE you are comfortable your "line issue" has been resolved, it can be set either way. You just need to see what looks/functions better for you. Response from "thebigdaddye" is WAY over-generalized. It seems to be stated as fact, which it is not. But as you see "as I have found the picture is better on all signals cable sd and hd feeds, dvd. hope this helps"....it has worked for him in HIS environment. Get your line issue corrected first.

I'll also note I have a 51" CRT RPTV Hitachi I purchased in February of 05. No issues at all and 360 looks nearly identical on 720P and 1080i. I should THANK your repairman for saying your CRT RPTV is too good for the 360!! :p Moral victory for my purchase decision to go with CRT RPTV!! :D Seriously though, the technology is fine for gaming. You should also give the "master burn-in" topic a thorough read. Over a year of gaming for me, sometimes upwards of 10 hours - not a hint of burn-in anywhere.
Take a step back for a second....

Is the xbox the only HD source you have? Since the repair guy didn't bring an HD source, you need to get your hands one. This is the only way to prove if you have a problem with the Tv.

Agree completely....sorry, meant to mention your post along with my "rhetoric".
Xbox is the only source I have that will do 480p, 720p, and 1080i. I have an Onkyo dvd player which will do 480i and 480p. My digitial cable does 480i and 1080i. Also, his signal generator did do HD, just not progressive signals. (480i, 1080i)

So in summary:

480I= No lines

480P= No lines on Xbox, faint lines on DVD

720p= Fully visible lines on xbox

1080i= lines of variable magnitude on xbox, no noticable lines on cable

In 1080i and 480p lines are not ALWAYS there. Occasionally they are absent for a time... then they will come back... and mabe disappear again later for a time.

I called Hitachi and told them what the repair man said. CS told me they would talk to their engineers and call me back in a day or two because they had never heard of anything like that on any of their TVs.

Thanks for all the discussion guys

Just from these two facts, you probably don't have a Tv problem. You might start looking for other people who also have similar problems with thier xbox using HD out.

Did you see the lines when he did 1080i from his generator? If not, you definitely do not have a Tv problem.

Next suggestion: Take YOUR xbox to a local store and hook it up to the same model Tv you have at home. Try to duplicate the lines...

I have this exact same TV and an Xbox 360, and I do not get ANY lines what so ever in any mode, 720P and 1080I both look fantastic, no hint of any lines what so ever.

That repair man was full of it...

I'd call them up and demand they send someone out who actually knows what they are doing. You have something wrong with your TV or your Xbox. Lines are not normal.
