I downloaded TMPGenc some time ago (before I got my ReplayTV) and now that I have it, I have installed and used DVArchive (wow - awesome program) to download sample programs, but TMPEnc gives me an error when I try to load it. It also says the 30 day MPeg 2 trial is expired (that's what I get for rushing things), so I do not know if the problem is with the file or with the expiration (it says the file is bad or unsupported).

I will be buying this program IF it will help me make SVCD's. If not, I really do not want to spend the money on it, but on a program that will let me.

I tried both a standard recording and a medium recording. I also tried running "fix-time" on it (had to figure out the command line options from the source code - needs documentation).

I do have Nero, but do not have the optional MPeg encoder.

Suggestions people? Who else is burning SVCD's?

I got a link previously to KVCD - looks good, but I want to make sure of my path: From ReplayTV to SVCD - and if possible an automated path (DVArchive downloads new programs automatically then launches a script when done that will process the files - I do not mind commercials).

Thanks for the help,

There has been a LOT of posts on this one. My suggestion is you do a search in this forum on:

DVD

Womble

fix-time

VCD

SVCD

KVCD

MPEG2

TMPGenc

PTS

GOP

etc.

To answer your question specifically, two things must happen:

1. ReplayTV files are MPEG-2 files, so you must be using a version of TMPGenc that processes MPEG-2 files. The "plus" version is the only version that will do it. If your version is expired, you will probably need to uninstall it and remove any related registery entries and re-install it. This is not an easy task. You may be able to email the authors for a temporary key.

2. ReplayTV files are notorious for needing to be "fixed". They all have "PTS errors" and the High Quality recordings almost always have "GOP errors". There are two programs out there that nicely fix the PTS errors: Womble's MPEG2VCR and fix-time.exe. The Womble product is expensive and the fix-time program is free. Only when you "fix" the files can you effectivly load and process them into TMPGencPlus.

Again, take the time to search the forum. There is a TON of information that will overwhelm you, but you will learn a lot!

I did search, but didn't find a specific answer. The problem is PROBABLY that my program was expired, but before I spent the money I thought I would ask to make sure.

Most people here seem to be making DVD's. That is fine, and probably what I will eventually be doing, but for now I'm going to make SVCD's because I have a CD burner.

Some people seem to have no luck with TMPGEnc while others swear by it. Others REALLY like Womble, but as you noted it is very expensive and I certainly cannot afford to get that purchase wrong.

One of my great wishes is to make everything automated (as noted), but have found little on that subject. Most people seem to be editing the files to remove commercials (and I will certainly do that) but it took reading the source for fix-time just to find out that it primarily wants piping input/out for the files (otherwise you pass -i"filename" -o"filename").

Anyway, I found a friend at work with TMPGenc and he's going to come over and try it out on my system and if it works I will purchase a copy.

Thanks for the help, you've given me more search for. :)
