So it seems I have made a mistake with the rear riser. The seats fit fine and I can walk but it has been noticed that it is eay for someone to slip off the front (mainly kids). Because of the depth of the room I am not going to have much room between the front row and the riser (not enough to walk behind). Here is a picture of the are without chairs.

So I see I have two options

(a) install a railing up against the front of the riser high enough to stop slipping off but not too high that it gets in the way of the leg room while sitting. I was thinking something like 1 foot above the riser might be good.

(b) extend the riser forward to push up against the back of the front row. I dislike this idea because it is more work and then I have to figure out how to cover it (more carpet?)

Does anyone have other suggestions? Also any idea on the railing option as to material/design?

Thanks,

John

why don't you put the front row chairs all the way back against the riser, creating a natural barier. most people do it that way, for obvious reasons of falling off the riser in the dark.

I had to deal with the same thing. I put up an 18" wall, wainscotted it and topped it of with a nice piece of wood. It doubled as a counter for snacks & remotes).

That is what I was thinking of doing, but not that nice.

We are going to try pushing the chairs back for now, but if that doesn't work I will certainly use the small wall idea now.

I had a temporary riser in my old place that was essentially 4' X 8', since that was the dimensions of the plywood. I was thinking of reusing this riser in my new dedicated theater, but wonder if it should be deeper than that (only holds second of two rows of seats, which will probably be Berklines or LZBs.). What depth do most folks have here? Thanks.

I like 4'6". Keep in mind that if you are building the riser for visibility, as you increase the depth of your riser you must also increase the height for every row visibility (that is, the deeper the riser, the higher it needs to be). You might want to do a sight line analysis.

Forget the chairs and just leave the riser as it is. The only people that are going to fit into that theater are going to have to be about 3 feet tall or less. Just let them sit on the edge with their legs dangling. :D
