Problem with Sharp 52D64U LCD, please help

Hello all,

After reading this board, I figured I would post this here and see if you guys could help me find a solution. About a year ago I purchased a 52D64U through Sharp Direct. I am a big movies and sports watcher, but my sharp really struggles in these areas. When watching HD channels through my scientific atlanta box from Comcast, I see a lot of "noise", looks like color static, in the background of the picture where there is a lot of color contrasts or light to dark contrast. I then went and purchased a Sony blu ray player hoping that would help, and hooked it up to my tv via an HDMI cable I ordered from monoprice.com. The picture noise was just as bad if not worse when watching blu rays on the player. I can only explain it as a static in the colors of the picture, it seems to be worse in darker colors such as blue. I contacted Sharp about the problem and they sent a tech to my house who saw the same thing I was seeing, so sharp had him replace the main board on the TV. It did not help at all. However Sharp said that if there was a problem with the TV that would have fixed it and that it must be a problem with my blu ray player, even though I am seeing it on all sources.. After several phone calls and me arguing with them about it, I gave up. Luckily I opened the case within my 1 year warranty, although it has now passed my 1 year warranty, I'm hoping I can somehow convince them to give me a new TV if I can't figure out a way to make the picture look better. Do you guys have any suggestions or any ideas as to what the problem could be? I've tried CNET's calibration settings and they didn't look very good. Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong? Any suggestions on what I can do to fix it? Settings? Thanks in advance guys.

Sounds like you need to contact Sharp again and see if they will send another tech out to look at the set.

If sounds like you're getting some sort of interference, which could be caused my any number of components with in the set or the signal. Being as it is present on all signal sources, chances are that the tv is the culprit.

To trouble shoot on your own, I'd suggest unplugging all inputs from the TV and hooking up just the Blu Ray Player. This will eliminate the cable tv hookup from introducing interference into the tv. Cable hookups are often not grounded properly, and this can cause all kinds of video and audio problems in components that are attached to the cable output.

Best of luck getting this resolved.

Anybody?

LCD TV's have power supply ground at same potential as the whole metal frame that supports parts, CCFL's and LCD screen. The CCFL current return path is via this metal frame. I am not sure why is this done this way, but I actually expected to se separate current return routes for various current return paths back to the power supply, and separate ones back to the inverter board (power supply for CCFL's).

Tuner and in particular pixel driver PCB have EXTENSIVE local decoupling and use huge number of filters to combat extremely noisy environment that LCD in fact presents as a whole.

Since the metal frame is not at different potential compared to other voltage rails' returns in your LCD TV, you could try one thing to make sure that ground pin from other devices connected to your LCD TV are not affecting metal frame potential. The antenna connection shield (coax cable shield) may be at different potential compared to mains (110V AC ?) ground pin as well...

Here's what you need to do:

1. Unplug EVERYTHING from the LCD TV

2. Take a peace of wire approximately 700 mm long and plug this peace of wire in to middle antenna connector - this will temporarily serve as the antenna

3. Tune in at least one channel and see if this improves the noise behaviour

If NO results are obtained, try mains power filter - you may have neon starters / lights or other devices in your household that are coursing noisy picture.

If still NO results - contact Sharp, explain them what you've done and demand solution. Authorised Sharp service repairer will have their service manuals with various levels of acceptable noise levels around various PCB's - ask technician to check if the noise levels comply with service manual.

Pixel driver PCB and tuner PCB make horrible high frequency noise and present noise pollution hazard really. To place all digital power supply rail returns at the same potential as the metal frame, which in addition caries high frequency / high voltage returns from/to inverter board does not make sense to me at all

Good luck and keep us updated with your progress

If it did not help, the tech should have pulled the board and called Sharp from your house as to what he should try next. Suggest Tcon board next, then panel. Since the complaint was opened before the end of warranty Sharp should continue with repair until you are satisfied.
so, any news / progress / feedback...????
