Problems after the HD-DVD update on Xbox360 ???

692 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Emdee86
Hi,

First I want to apologize for my bad english, it's not my native language.

Some people on a french forum find a very big difference between the scenes with action and the scenes with only speaks.

It seems that they must increase the volume (up to 7db more) when the scene is only made of speaking and rush to their remote control to decrease the volume when there are some actions on screen.

Personnaly I didn't find a difference and I'm really happy to enjoy now all my first ten HD-DVD, but I wanted to know if you're aware of such a problem ??

TIA for your answers.

This is the way it is supposed to work.

Before the update, all movies with Dolby Digital Plus tracks used dynamic range control (DRC). This was bad, because for some action movies it meant that action scenes with explosions, etc. were not at the appropriate volumes, etc. (They should be loud, but DRC effectively makes loud parts quieter and makes quiet parts like dialogue louder.)

Now, after the update, you have the option to turn this on or off. It's under the HD DVD display menu.

I turn DRC on when I am watching a movie at night and don't want to bother my neighbours. Otherwise I leave DRC off, to get the full range of sound, as it was intended.

As I said I find the update very good, at least to my ears.

But for what I know, they (those with this problem) have turned off this option you talked about, and they found that the dynamic difference between the silent scene and the actions is now too big.

I'll tell those with the problem that I opened this thread so they'll come here to explain their problem better than me (I hope so at least).

The range is SUPPOSED to be big for some movies. If the dynamic range is too big for them, then they can turn DRC back on to decrease the dynamic range.

That's the great thing about this latest HD DVD Update. Now we can choose.
Hi,

Some have reported that the center channel is lower than the others channels, specially when you have only voices characters on the scene. So they have to increase the center channel, if they increase the general volume and the action comes, the dynamic range is too high for the room. So, they had a general DRC trouble, but now it's only a center DRC trouble.
