OK, is is semi OT, but most folks here have a MUCH more discerning eye...

I picked up a dvd recorder, so I could have a better sd tv input to my Runco 980Ultra. Since my doubler only has one component input, I connected both my DVD and the TV source to my Yamaha RX-V1200 receiver, using it to switch component inputs.

GROSS.

I think the way to describe what I am seeing is greatly compressed video bandwidth - the highlights are gone - anything that should be light colored is full on white. Looks like the THX test squares on the contrast screen, when the contrast is turned up way to high. Very washed out looking.

Have the rest of you seen similar results? (BTW, things look fine when connected directly to component inputs on the scaler.) While the Yammy isn't top of the line, it was a semi pricy unit that I got from a local high-end dealer. (i.e, not a closeut unit at a local BB or Wallyworld.)

I know, for relative merits of recievers, I need to go to another forum; I was just wondering if fellow CRTrs were haveing good or bad luck using their receivers as video switchers.

Thanks

It sounds as though it's NOT just switching and actually has some kind of amplifying or processing in there.

This topic was covered before and as I remember the conclusion was not to use the AV receiver for switching sources. That should be left to the scaler or dedicated video switcher.

that's what I was vaguely recalling - just wanted to check, see if it anyone here was indeed doing it, and having good luck with it.

Techman - dug out the manual, supposedly the component out passes DC to 60MHz, -3db. Component in signal level is 0.7Vp-p/75ohm. (understand the frequency response, but have no clue what the input specs tell me.)

From that, it would "appear" to look ok, although 60MHz isn't that high, but then again the source probably isn't too high either. The .7Vpp is fine @75 ohms, but they MUST be doing something else.

I would be inclined to agree - it looks as if they are boosting the levels - if the video was audio, I would tend to believe it is just being overdriven..and I can't pull back the levels on either the doubler or the pj to get it under control.

Actually, they're NOT boosting anything at .7vpp, that's what the signal should be going in to the projector.

I don't know what other equipment you have but check that the input as well as the output is terminated.

Denon dvd1600 into Yamaha receiver; into either DVDO Iscan Pro or Quadscan Pro, into Runco 980. problem seems to be in component switching section - Yamaha switches between S-video inputs just fine.

No termination that I know of on DVDO; but it woks fine when input directly from dvd to DVDO - only problem when going thru receiver. (just read manual - dvdo mentions no termination options.) heck - if it hadn't been working fine without the switching, I would have been whining about this a year and a half ago
