I just bought a Panasonic TH42pa20. Picture is great with DVDs at 480p and the color matrix adjustment set to HD (versus SD). But otherwise the picture is very bright. This is particularly so with Direct TV SD signals using the S input. Some channels are "OK", but CNN and CNBC look like the faces have been oiled and there is a spotlight on them, even with brightness and picture set to zero. The DVDs at 480p are much better, but they are still a little bright unless with the color matrix set to SD.

Any suggestions are welcome. Perhaps the gamma is too high and the set needs adjustment?

Did you try inputing the SD signal with a composite cable? It worked for me even though it seems like it should be worse. It has to do with the comb filter- It's an easy experiment which I "lucked" into. I still run my HD tuner and DVD via component cables
