Folks,

I am considering returning my Emotiva LMC-1, which I bought in combo with the LPA-1. I cannot get over the hiss, which is NOT a ground loop issue. The hiss enters my system at the LMC-1... I have Axiom M22 fronts, QS8 surrounds and VP150 center. The hiss is very annoying and audible from listening position, especially from surrounds.

I want to keep the LPA-1.

I don't think I can afford a pre/pro (do correct me if I'm wrong), so, my question: for around $500, what receiver can I buy that has good DACs, has pre-outs for my LPA-1? Obviously, I do not need lots of power. I would like HDMI that can take LPCM from Toshiba HD-A1, but it's not that big a deal, as long as the pre/pro/receiver has analog 5.1 for the analog 7.1 out of the HD-A1.

Best sound quality is what I'm looking for. I do NOT care about video upscaling, deinterlacing, etc.

50% movies / 50% music.

Given the above, what should I buy? I only have this weekend to decide, so any help will be appreciated.

Regards,

Rodney

yes, 2nd LMC-1 came in, same hiss.

got a Yamaha RX-V661 from BB last night. No hiss...

I LOVE the LMC-1 sound quality, but in quiet movie scenes, the hiss is so audible, I just can't stand it... I also love Emotiva customer service. Never dealt with better people.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Rodney

Thanks for the link.

Are certain Marantz or Onkyo models (or any other consumer brand like Yamaha, Denon, Harmdn Kardon, etc.) known for their great DACs and whatever else is needed for great SQ (great music soundstage, imaging, great movies enveloping)? Again, I don't care for video features, and I will be using pre-outs to the Emotiva LPA-1, so power per channel is not important.

Anyone of those brands will be good for what you are wanting.

Are you even sure LMC-1 was the culprit? Could it be your LPA-1 that generates the hiss?

Before I even considered another pre/pro/receiver many tests were done that singled out the LMC-1 being the culprit.

I used the pre-outs from the Yamaha RX-V661 to the LPA-1 and there is no hiss unless I put my ear to the tweeter...

Thanks,

That yamaha isnt a particulary bad receiver to use as a Pre/Pro... I use the earlier version (RX-V657) and have been happy enough with it considering the price. The powered zone 2 is a nice bonus for me...

I have the LMC-1/LPA-1 combo. I also have no hiss. I suspect the hiss is caused by high impedence sensitive speakers. I also think people who have hiss have speakers that are rated at 8ohms that actually clock in at 5-6ohms.

I've heard others coplain about the hiss, thinking it could be a signifcant problem. I have Energy Audigy 2+2 speakers. These speakers look identical to the Definitive Technology bipolar speakers.
