I have a progressive DVD player with VGA out... The image is pretty good. I was wondering if a line doubler on a non progessive DVD player would give a better image. I was considering by a line doubler but was wondering if it is really necessary if I watch mostly DVD's.

It is probably better to stay with the progressive DVD player, especially if you're considering a used (i.e. - older) line doubler. You will almost certainly experience far more motion artifacts with older doublers than with your current progressive DVD player.

I say this based on my experience upgrading from a Pioneer Elite DV-05 (non-progressive) and Runco 3050 line doubler (circa 1997) to a HTPC-based progressive player. The improvement in performance was staggering.

As far as newer doublers/scalers are concerned, I can't comment. But I suspect that if you're not concerned about other sources (e.g., laser disk, DSS, etc) - and you indicated that you're not - you'll probably do best with the progressive DVD player.
