I hve been using my Sony VPL Cx-10 projector primarily as a presentation device for my business. I have also hooked it up to my TV set and DVD player using the "S-Video" input on the projector.

My DVD player (Philips DVD953) also has progressive scan (480p) capability using the component video outputs. However, the projector does not have component video inputs.

My question is:

Can I connect the progresssive component output to the projectors VGA input using some type of conversion or breakout cable?

It would seem to me that if my projector can accept a progressive signal from my computer, I should be able to do something similar with my DVD.

Any suggestions?

You need to check your manual (for Sony CX-10) whether it accepts component input through the VGA-connector. Some projectors do and they will also work with progressive dvd players. All you need then is a 3 x RCA -> VGA cable.

Yes, there is such adapters, they are called transcoders. You can find them at copperbox.com or audioauthority.com . Actually about a week ago I saw one for sale cheap in the classifieds here.

If projector does not accept component input via VGA port then you will need an Audio Authority 09A62 or KeyDigital CTCA2 transcoder.

According to the projector's manual, the VGA port does accept component input. However, it does not specifically state whether that input is interlaced or progressive.

that prompts me to ask another question - is the VGA inpu that is coming from my computer in progressive (480p) format?

dhnewton,

then you can either deduce this from the vertical and horizonal referesh rates that are within the allowed specifications for component input OR you can just get the cable and try :)

If you can post the full specs, we can tell you whether a 3xRCA component to -> 1xVGA component cable is likely to work.

You don't need a transcoder. AT least not untill we have made sure that component doesn't work.

Ok!

The DVD ouput specs are:

Y: 1 Vpp into 75 ohms

Pr/Cr Pb/Cb: .7vpp into 75 ohms

The Sony projector input specs are:

Analog RGB Component HD D-sub 15 pin (female)

R/R-Y .7Vp +-2db, positive, 75 ohm

G .7Vp +-2db, positive, 75 ohm

G with Sync /Y 1.0 Vp +-2db, sync negative, 75 ohm

B/B-Y .7Vp +-2db, positive, 75 ohm

There are also over 30 presets in the projector for the input signals. I think the appropriate ones are

15K RGB Component 50 hz fh=15.625 khz, fv=50 hz, H/V= S on G

15K RGB Component 60 hz fh=15.374 khz, fv=59.940 hz, H/V= S on G

Ah, it appears your VGA connector only accepts RGsB component input and not Y/Pb/Pr component input that the dvd player provides.

Please double check that your projector input does not list Y/Cb/Cr or Y/Pb/Pr component inputs.

If it doesn't, then you'll need a transcoder from Y/Pb/Pr to RGsB.

Thanks Halcy for all of your help.

Unfortunately, my projector makes no reference to Y/Cb/Cr or Y/Pb/Pr component inputs.

Next step, look at trancoders.

Hello,

Your Sony VPL Cx-10 projector will take component input from your DVD

player but not a progressive one. The interlaced component will look

much better than S-Video.

Unfortunately if you use your RGB in from a normal trancoder you will

not be able to use the 16x9 ability of your projector. The Sony

cannot be set up for 16x9 in RGB mode only component and S-Video.

Avery,

Thanks for your comments. I had the suspicion all along that it couldn't take the progressive scan format, but couldn't find an answer in all of the literature.

As far as 16:9 is concerned, since my DVD player already detects the format of the disc and re-sizes the picture accordingly (4:3, 16:9, 2.34:1), does it really make any difference whether i can used the 16:9 capability of the projector?

Doug,

Your DVD player will detect the format of the disc but will not

detect your projector. In most cases you will want the projector to be in

16x9 mode and your DVD player in 16x9 auto mode as most DVD are 16x9

enhanced. If you use the RGB input (4:3 only) on your projector your

DVD player will have to be set to 4:3 mode and you will not benefit

from 16x9 enhanced DVDs.

@ dhnewton

because your sony won´t accept progressive input voa component there is also a an other solution or just two

the first is: use a HTPC via the VGA -Input -> please have alook in the HTPC Forum

the second will be. There are DVd-players around - like skyworth for around 250 $ which have an VGA (HD15 female) output. This you can connect to your pj, because then the pj accept this signal as an PC-signal and will run the DVD; you will find also more information here in the specialiced forum
