We are building a house with a media room. Eventually I will get a screen, but with two small children, I wonder about it's durability. The screens I've seen would not hold up to my two-year-old's abuse. And what if he finds a pen and decides to draw on it?


For now, I'm considering projecting onto a blank wall. Do any of you do this? If so, what are the considerations? Should the wall color be white or some other color? Satin or flat paint, etc.?

Ok, someone back me up here, but I think Sherwin Williams makes a paint that a lot of people use to create screens on walls.


I think it's called Sherwin Williams Luminous Flat White. Several coats of that should do the trick nicely.

Consumer reports shows that Glidden and Sherwin Williams are the two worst paints out there.

Use something better, and to be totally smooth, you should spray it on... with either HVLP and conventional air sprayer. Not those airless jobs - they don't make a smooth-as-glass finish. Use a 220 grit random orbital finish sander between all primer layers.

I sprayed 5 coats of water-based Zinsser primer onto a 1/4" Lauan plywood screen (cut 48high x 64wide)4x3 ratio. (sanding between) This gave me a smooth finish for my Behr (picked my own colorants) grey paint... Flat sheen required to prevent glare from projector reflection.

The plywood is so light, you can pick it up with one hand, but stiff enough that I mounted it to my wall with only 4 screws each at the top and bottom edge! Only the screw head holds it to the wall... no holes in the screen. No frame, no black masking. Clean and simple installation.

Yes there are several of us that project onto a wall. However, I suggest you use the search facility on this site, or just change the number of days in the filter (at the top) to see previous posts. But to answer your question, consider that you may not be sure if you want a 16:98 screen or 4:3. As for the color, it depends on your environment. You may have to experiment to find a color that suits you. I grabbed some paint chips and taped them on my wall to see which colors might work. Then narrowed the field from there.


If you use flat paint, then all the sanding will be minimized (I didn't need to). I simply turned my projector on, and painted within the lines http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif I used Ralph Lauren flat white tinted to Dover Cliffs. Others have gone darker like Glidden Universal Gray or even Veil. Some have even concocted their own formula by mixing paints.


That's the beauty of painting your wall. If you don't like it, repaint it. BTW, I only used about a quart of paint, Sherwin-Williams does not have Luminous in quarts. I went to Home Depot instead.
