Last winter in the Dunes, we saw someone projecting to the side of their RV It was amazing! We would like to try this. Can anyone advise us? I've found fabric but I don't know enough about projector's to make a decision. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

thats not camping
just kiddin

you could project it on any type of white fabric and you would be fine, you probaly are not aiming at quality since your out there camping. Actually last week my wife and I went to the neighbors and we watched a movie outside which they projected on there garage, it projected fine, of coarse you wont get as good as picture on the real screen but it was fun just watching it outside with them, dont get me wrong its not a bad picture though.

I use whiteboard cut down to fit... have 1 in each camper that give me about a 43" screen and use pc surround speakers with a sub for sound... have drilled holes and figured out ways to hang them on the campers.

As an owner of an Optoma Movietime DV10 (an All-In-One projector with DVD player and speakers), I've projected on all sorts of surfaces. If the side of the RV doesn't have all kinds of stickers on it, the picture will look good (relatively speaking of course). The textured side won't make that big of a difference. If you hang a sheet on the side, it will look even better. High thread count sheets work the best, but anything goes in a pinch.

The other thing you have to remember is that you'll need a video source and a sound source. A laptop can provide both as long as it has a video out port and the projector can accept it. Of course, an All-In-One like the Optoma or several Epson models is even better. I literally can take the projector out of its case and be watching a movie in under 5 minutes. And everyone loves a movie on the big screen, especially out in the wilderness.

One important thing - Don't forget an extension cord.

I could not project onto the side of my motorhome. It is a 1974 GMC:

In my GMC club, though, we have had movie nights using portable stand-type projection screens. Another option is the inflatable screens that are available.

If you want to project onto the vehicle, though, I agree that a large white cloth would make the picture much better. You could make a frame out of 1x2" pieces of wood, perhaps.

Lotta people post in other forums about projection on side walls of rvs at campgrounds and backyard outdoor "theater" - there's an outdoor theater forum at this site.

Camping you DON'T want to bother neighbors who are packed in all around you. I would get a boombox with an audio input and a cheap dvd player for the video source - yeah, you can use your laptop but I wouldn't put my laptop outdoors in that situation.

Screen? I would hang a tarp - get a cheap 15ft X 15ft. at Walmart with a gray side and it would be easy enough to hang - we have a Class A RV - I just don't have a desire to throw big screen movie images on a screen in a campground setting - we do it in our backyard sometimes and it's okay - I tack up the tarp on our home's front wall every Halloween and create little scary shows for the trick-or-treaters - works great - for Halloween I use a amp head with EQ and small PA speaker towers I bought at a pawn shop cause I want the scary soundtrack to rebound up and down the street - at a campground I wouldn't want to impose my fun on ANYONE - a boombox with an audio input would be the most audio I would use.

Outdoor "theater" with a projector is not rocket science and can be a bunch of fun.
