I am hooking up a projector. The projector has rgb, av, dvi, s, and hdmi inputs. The projector is located somewhat far away from the dvd player, tv box, and computer. my question is, is there a box or unit that i can plug them all into and have one cable(hdmi or other) go to the projector and save on buying 5 different cables?

there are a lot of home theater receivers that will upconvert all analog inputs to a digital (hdmi) output. that is one option although expensive. I think the cheapest upconverting amps are around $400. it would allow you to plug all your sources into the receiver and have one long HDMI run up to your projector. If you go this route I would recommend going to monoprice.com and getting a high quality long HDMI cable to fit your needs.

ok, what if it isnt hdmi, what if instead it is component video. How do most people go about hooking up and tv box, dvd, and computer up to a monitor? do they run cables for each? or have a switch?

You can connect all of your video sources to a Lumagen video processor. Then you connect one cable from the output of the video processor to your display. The video processor also gives you the ability to fully calibrate your video system.

If you do the same thing that I suggested for hdmi but use component instead (that is, use a 3x1 component switch), that will work too. That's what I (and a lot of others) do. And it's simple and inexpensive.

Unless your projector has a native resolution of 1080 lines and can handle 1080p, you will have as good a picture as your projector is capable of.
