projector newb, just got a hc3000

I have been reading and searching on this site for a while and you guys convinced me to go front projector. I just bought a hc3000 on clearance from a large chain store, got all my cables and the mount from monoprice.com (great place) and ordered a 100" 16:9 cheap Ultra pulldown from a large online retailer. Signal will come from an xbox360 arcade via hdmi and a high def cable box via component.

I plan on using DaGamePimp's preliminary settings: 5900k color, etc. because there is no calibration money in my future. I also read there is a setting I need to change from 97% to 100%, I should be able to figure all that out. Should I mess with any other settings like RGB, etc.?

Is there anything you experienced guys can tell me about installing the setup that might save me some time and frustration? Ive read all I could but im sure im still missing something. I love xbox360 and this should be quite an upgrade from my roommate's 32" lcd

Thanks and what a great forum! very few flame wars, just tons of objective information.

The setting from 97 to 100 is the overscan setting. You can easily set the brightness, contrast, tint, sharpness and color yourself with an AVIA Guide to Home Theater Disk and the blue filter that comes with it.

At the very least, you should set brightness and contrast, tint, and color with any DVD with THX test patterns and a pair of thx optimizer glasses

Or you can rent the avia disk and use the thx glasses with it (the glasses are the same as the avia blue filter)
great info gwlaw99, that was exactly what I needed. I just hooked this thing up and WWWOOOWWW I had never even seen an hd projector before and this is unreal.
Congratulations on your projector. I am also a recent owner of the HC3000.

I was curious, how are skin tones on yours so far? I've been noticing some "weirdness" to mine. People seem to sometimes have a yellowy-tint to them, making them look a bit unhealthy or sick.
I saw a hc1500 that had the same yellow tint to some flesh tones only during this one movie. other movies played flesh tones fine. i adjusted the Mits to have better flesh tones on that one movie and it looks very good now.

Mits out of box needs adjust for sure, but Wow it throws a nice image, just get it dialed in.

You wouldn't perchance be referring to the HD-DVD transfer of Superman would you? hehehehe....everyone looks sick...worst transfer I have seen....

Sometimes it really is the disk....
The main movie I noticed it was the "Good Luck Chuck" DVD. After that, I swear I also saw the same problem in 3:10 to Yuma, Jimmy and Judy, Mr. Woodcock, Love Lies Bleeding, all SD-DVDs, and finally the Blu-ray Prison Break season 1.

I don't know if it's just my imagination or what, but it's really weirding me out. Just when I though I had some settings that I could use, I started noticing the yellowy flesh problem.
I am not having too much problem with flesh tones, but i am far from an expert. 5900k seems to be the best for my tastes, but also realize that I don't have hd-dvd yet, only movies through my cable box.

Any advice on settings for use with ambient light? I cranked the brightness up and have on brilliant color, working pretty darn well next to my sliding door, just wondering if anyone has any other tricks.
