Just setting up a front projection room. Audio all complete. Using a DIY screen with Silverscreen Behr paint and a great flat black enamel from Ace Hardware (#225A106) and Infocus LP70+ borrowed from work on weekends. Final plan, when funds recover is a projector in the $5K range with electric screen ($2-3K). Probably early next year. Currently watching 16:9 DVDs on a 7 foot wide screen. Very impressive picture for a novice and the family is watching 2-3 movies a weekend. Question: The only concern is the projector is definitely loud during quite scenes. The LP70+ is mounted on the ceiling approx. 6.5 feet above our heads. Room is 15' long X 14' wide. 200 year old house with low beamed ceiling. I cant find any noise spec on this projector. Will I have the same problem with a projector in the $5K range?? Will I have to build a hush box?

Thanks

If the ambient noise in your room when there is no sound from the movie playing is below that emitted by the projector, you will hear the projector unless the projector is extremely far away from you (which appears to not be the case). My limited experience with projector mfg's noise specifications is that they are not accurate and/or cannot be properly interpreted because they do not specify them in useful ways. If you are sensitive to fan noise, then I would plan for a "hush box". The cost of the projector has only an anecdotal correlation with its noise level unless the mfg is specifically touting its low noise characteristics. The cooling system design and how well its engineered; internal airflow design, fan(s) characteristics, chassis design/size, lamp power, etc. are what drives the noise level.

Thanks for insight, I have personally only seen 1 pj over $5K in action at a dealer and it was under absolutely perfect room conditions. I was trying to get a feel for what a $5K projector would sound like in not so perfect conditions. Most all pj that I have looked at are about 30db of noise, so I was wondering how my loaner was in comparison.

The Optoma H77 (just a little bit higher than $5K) is really quiet. On the low lamp setting, I can hardly hear it (without any sound on in the room). I wish my HD DVR was as quiet! SJ

Room shape and other factors can increase the loudness of a projector. I think a square room with low ceiling would make a quiet projector loud! I'd definitely consider a hushbox solution.

The Yamaha LPX-510 is also extremely quiet when on all settings except for the highest "Bright" mode.

It is really hard to hear it when anything sonically is happening in a movie.

you can pretty much bet money on it. What never gets mentioned is they get louder with time.
