Just a question I had that I could not find an answer to.

All things being equal which is better for PQ/Sharpness/Contrast etc, a PJ mounted as close as possible (using max zoom for your screen) or a PJ mounted as far as possible using NO zoom?

Take brightness out of your answer OR will they be about equal using both methods?


I guess I can even ask which is the greater sin, zooming or distance?

Or does this all not matter since overall the PQ difference won't be that drastic given todays PJ's?

Most of the 1080p projectors have really great optics. So Sharpness should not be an issue. It would be best to ask about specific projector models in this regard and not all projectors in general.


Contrast is interesting, because while the black levels would probably be perceptably better at longest throw / min zoom, the higher FL of mounting it closeest can actually improve contrast in many scenes.


By choice I mount most projectors these days at max zoom / closest throw when given the choice.

In Jason's review of the RS1, I believe he got max brightness/min CR at max zoom and min brightness/max CR at min zoom.
