That first shot! Need to get my computer up so i can see what this madvr is all about.:)
Surely makes a HUGE difference for my projector since you can do dynamic tone mapping with madvr plus I created a 3D LUT as well that I use via madvr. It really is a great piece of software which I use with MPC-HC as my player :)

I have to see if i can get this. reference photo!
It’s been a while since I watched this, long prior to the firmware update but it did appear to look more polished. I have read on the regular thread them talking about the e-shift looking different now and frankly I don’t know if such a thing would be possible through a software tweak but images do look better.

Quick question, which do you prefer?

At times I actually prefer my SDR image than the HDR but this is probably as much to do with the fact that's what I am use to and the other appears to me to be too colourful.

For that scene alone I definitely prefer the HDR profile image. But many other scenes throughout the movie were simply too much with the HDR profile. Like you said they were too colorful and were causing some slight crush.

Now my hope is to get either a player or apple TV 4k that can do SDR to HDR conversion. This will give me the middle ground I am after for the many SDR movies I have.

I'm not quite following. You are playing a rip from the Blu-ray and not the UHD Blu-Ray? So, why would you even use HDR on a regular Blu-ray?
I think it looks overcooked and the SDR is the way to go for Blu-Ray. Much more natural looking. BTW, nice pictures. :)

You are correct. It is the rip from the 1080p SDR Blu-Ray. The picture that is overcooked is using the HDR profile in my JVC. This is using a custom gamma curve that Chad B calibrated. I wanted to show the difference between both as I am looking to get a sort of middle ground between those two images using some sort of SDR to HDR conversion.

4K UHD with HDR shouldn't look overcooked. It should not look that much different from the Blu-ray. It should look more realistic but not " cartoonish "*.

I think its the effect of upscaling a 1080p source to a calibrated UHD setting

Correct, but the movie is not a 4k UHD it is the 1080P Blu-ray. You are seeing it as more cartoonish and overcooked is because I set my projector to the HDR profile while sending it a 1080P SDR signal. Thus, making everything look overcooked.

When fed a 4k HDR signal the image is not overcooked or cartoonish.

I simply thought it was an interesting image and wanted to show the difference.

Nope, all I did was change the picture settings in my projector.

Definitely shouldn’t look cartoonish but I at times feel the colour range is unrealistic but it’s probably not being use to seeing HDR often enough. At the time I questioned the above comparison I thought one was being feed an SDR signal and the other HDR. Funnily we have been discussing comparing the Epson’s HDR slider to the Panasonic’s SDR 2020 conversion which @gunlife kindly did a video comparison that was quite interesting.
