Hi,

Can someone confirm that I did this properly? I have Vista x64 and I am using the Media Center. At first I was using MPC-HC x32 and Zoom Player which is also 32 bit. In ZP, I was using CoreAVC as my H.264 decoder and in MPC I was using the built in decoder to take advantage of DXVA. For both I was using the 32 bit FFDSHOW for audio. When I switched to Media Center, I was getting Cannot play the file errors when playing mkv files. I installed Haali x64 and also downloaded and registered the x64 version of MPCVideoDec.ax. I still got the errors so I downloaded and installed the x64 version of ffdshow for audio. When I opened my mkv file in graphedit, the file was properly being split by Haali and then video was sent to MPC, and audio to FFDSHOW. In Media Center, my files now play properly. My question is if in graphedit it shows the above graph, is that really what Media Center is using? Also, since I can't ALT-TAB into Vista's perfmon while a movie is playing in Media Center, how can I tell if it is really using the MPC decoder and therefore using DXVA? Because when I play the file in MPC-HC my CPU hovers around 5%.

TIA!

I made a thread about this a while ago because I had the same issue as you. I installed Haali x64 and ffd x64 and everything plays fine. People told me that VMC can not use MPC's internal decoders.

And that makes sense to me. I think its probably true but there are users here that know far more then me.

If you want to see where your cpu is at. (its probably going to be higher then you would like depending on what type of cpu you have) Just open media center in windowed mode. Not in full screen. Then right click on the task bar and open the task manager. I just did it like this so I know it will work.

Good luck.

Vista 64 in Media Center requires native 64 bit splitters, Muxers and Codecs...

To see what the correct graph is you need to be using GraphStudio 64 bit. The 32 bit version will show the 32 bit DirectShow filters the 64 bit one will show the 64 bit filters - both on a 64 bit platform. In otherwords you can have 32 bit and 64 bit filters on the same machine - example: I use madflac for 32 bit players playing flac and use FFDSHWOW for 64 bit (Media Center) playing FLAC.

The graph that is generated under 64 bit will not necessarily resemble what is going to be used in Media Center. Media Center does not follow the merit ratings. It forces the codecs that are set within the registry. If you want to change them use this tool:

Windows 7 - dont know if it works for Vista but it should

OR

Vista or Win 7 - Never used it because I use Win 7 and used the above.

You will need to log out and log back in to take effect - sometimes a reboot is necessary also.

The difference in using DXVA is huge. On a dual core in Media Center with DXVA you would be below 15% and without you would be above 50%.

I would recommend you install Shark007 codec pack. Its the best one I have used and works with every application I have thrown at it since it uses the base codecs (FFDSHOW, MPC, etc.). It supports 64 bit and 32 bit and is optimally configured for the best codecs with the best general usage settings. This will take the guessing out of what is the correct codec to use.

Good Luck...

PS... take a look at this site - even though its for Windows 7 just 99% is applicable to Vista Media Center: http://www.hack7mc.com/

I just wanted to post a quick update. I think that graphstudio64 was telling me the right info. I started VMC in windowed mode and checked the task manager. My CPU was running at between 1 and 5%. So if anyone is curious, check my first post to see how I configured my Vista x64 VMC to work with DXVA!

Thanks all.
