Hi all,


Below are my plans for a dedicated theatre room. The size of the room, window and the riser are set in stone with the builder. However, everything else is fair game.

Room size:

The room is 5.5 meters (18') long, by 4.5 meters (15') wide with an 2.59 meter (8'6") ceiling. The back row's eye level is 15' feet from the screen. The front row is about 10' from the screen. The riser is 19cm (7.5"). However, 99% of the time there will be no one in the front row.


There is a 20mm (8') soffit around the edge of the ceiling.

My proposed gear:

Projector: JCV X35 / RS46

Screen: Da-Lite High Power 2.4 gain 133" 2.25:1 (Will create DIY masking for 16:9)

AVR: Onkyo 818

Speakers: Custom made from a local company (adelaidespeakers.com.au). Based on the Timberwolf series with ribbon tweeters etc. 7.1 setup. 12" Sub.

Panasonic Air-con for what its worth.

Panasonic blu-ray

WDTV Live media streamer

Deep blue or Purple (almost black) curtains on the side and back)

I suspect this will work out very well. The mid point mounting of the projector, coupled with the big screen, and two wide seating, with the High Power screen reminds me of the

JVC RS1 / large screen High Power coupling that was popular years ago on the AVS. And the High Power screen counters the white soffit, by focusing light coming off the screen,

in a narrow cone?


I'm pretty sure I see where you are going with this, except for the front mounted electronics. I would skip the front cabinet and move the audio video rack from the front of the room.

The wood finished speakers may also cost you some contrast ratio, being so close to the screen.


Is the riser to be light coloured also?

I totally understand where you are coming from. Did that very same questioning and "what are you thinking" thing with a friend's RS1 / 130" High Power set up he did.

Had to go see it because on paper, it just didn't work. Left thinking the setup just needs a Lumagen scaler to fix the cartoony colors...



Seeing was believing. Your setup is apples and oranges, as the High Power was designed for low mounted projectors, and I doubt your projector was mounted mid room vertically.

(Interestingly enough, there previously there was a 54x96" Silverstar in that home theater and a Sony 1292Q and there was a hotspot halo.... I also played the hotspot questioning card.
)


Where are you getting your 2400 lumen number from? I read 703 lumens, calibrated. So you actually might be agreeing...

From what I've read, 2.4 or 2.5 is about the peak output of the HP screen, but in reality, we might get somewhere between 1.8 and 2.0 gain.


Also, with the 133" scope screen, the image will be over scanned (zoomed in) so it is the equivalent of a 140" 16:9 screen.


Most reviews show about 700-800 calibrated lumens when brand new with the X35. With that amount of gain, we plan to use low lamp mode and close the manual iris a fair bit to reduce brightness and improve contrast ratio. If my calculations are correct we should be in the 20 FtL ballpark.


However, when we mask the screen to 105" for 16:9, over-brightness might be more of a problem, but hopefully low-lamp and the iris will manage that.


Of course, over time the bulb will dim, but hopefully with this screen, we will get more out of it.

As I remember, my comparative lumen numers are the advertised ANSI lumens outputs, which we all know are bogus, but probably useful for comparisons.

The RS46 is advertised as 1300 lumens, but the reviews say its about 700 calibrated.


From all reports, 120" screen will have sufficient brightness for most of the lamps life, but once you go up to 130"+, you will have a shorter lamp life to keep up with that screen.
