vista looks nice, and is easy....so i would go for vista over xp. But thats just me

Windows XP MC REQUIRES an analog TV tuner card to setup media center to watch to TV. I never found a way around it. It can taken out to just watch, but you need to put that back in to re-configure.
Vista doesn't and so my 7-year old TV tuner card is just sitting around now

Plugins made for specifically for VMC are much, much nicer than the XP plugins.
If you are buying a new system, the option of cablecard is available, not cheap but it's there.
With the fiji release of VMC (reported to be in beta testing at the moment) they are supposedly adding Directv support as well as native QAM support.
